Obasute means something like 'throwing away old ladies'. It's about a mountain the Japanese used to take their elderly mothers to for the purpose of abandoning them and letting them die. There's also been at least two important films on this same subject: The Ballad of Narayama (1958) which was shone to me in a history of film class when I was in college and what must be a remake The Ballad of Narayama (1982) which won the grand prize at Cannes.in this collection are three stories by the prolific author Yasushi Inoue, the recipient of every major prize in Japanese literature: "The Counterfeiter," "Obasute," and "The Full Moon."

My question is who's been to a or the real Mt. Obasute? How many are there in Japan? Where are they? Tell me anything you know about it.
