Robo soapland for the elderly: 'I like both ways'

Postby Taro Toporific » Mon Mar 08, 2004 4:03 pm

Ok, this ain't "news" except to hard-up-for-a-story FG reporter but it's still interesting. I've actually had this done to me in the J-hospital 8 years ago by some very bored night nurses as entertainment...their washing maching had 6 portholes in the sides that they reached into to scrub my various bits in addition to the auto-soap job. :P

Japan elderly take spin in people-washing machinesNT Times / March 7
MACHIDA, Japan -- With an electronic whir, the machine released a dollop of "peach body shampoo." Then as the cleansing action kicked in....
...a littl more hot water, please?". Futuristic images of elderly Japanese going through rinse cycles in rows of washing machines may evoke chills. t ... Several elderly women living in Katsura-ryo said they rather enjoyed their robotic baths.
"It automatically washes my body, so I am quite happy about it," said Kuni Kikuchi, an 88-year-old.... "These bubbles are good for the massage effect."....Eiko Suzuki, 73, generally agreed, saying: "I like both ways. "

That thing is awesome. It used be part of my job to bathe an elderly woman and I'll tell you bathing a handicapped or elderly person is a difficult job. And it's something that's really important to do right. I used to be a caregiver for head injured people and we were literally ass-wipers. My friend and I joked that it was the most important job in the world. But what made it funny to us was the truth in it. Caring for those who can't care for themselves is probably the most important work in the world. It absolutely has to be done.

BTW, just register for the NYTimes. It's free and it remembers me so I can just click on. It's worth it isn't it?

Yeah I think elderly care is totally important especially for those who are bedridden and cannot even move much less feed or bathe themselves. I admire those workers who do that sort of thing day in and day out.

These should be installed in every nursing home/village, hospital, hospice, and so on. Governments should buy the machines with tax payer's money because many of us will be heading for one of these places when we get older.

I'll register, in fact I think I registered before but the email account I used was cancelled and I don't know the password. :D

Oddly, over the years I've been a morgue attendant, a caregiver, a patient and then an emergency/substitute caregiver. Damn, I can't anything to say sage to say about the experience but, 'I like both ways'.

Sure, they all love the washing machine, but just try getting them into the tumble drier ...

Jokes aside, I admire those who've really worked as caregivers.
