It's Official: Japan is a Racist Country

Postby AssKissinger » Thu Mar 11, 2004 2:44 pm

Who'd argue with the guardian?Hit It Girls
Japan is hoping to boost foreign investment and tourism by promoting the country as a land of hospitality. However, institutional racism and the media's tendency to blame foreigners for rising crime means many visitors find themselves less than welcome
Actually, I think all the key points in this article have already been discussed on FG. It kind of makes me wonder if this guy is reading us.

Les

Postby Marvin Feltcher » Thu Mar 11, 2004 4:12 pm

South Afrian Les? If so, a marvellous man himself. A true unsung hero who sacrificed much for the anti-apartheid movement and one of the nicest people I met in my time at the Yom.

Yeah, as they rewrite their constitution and press you into slave labor again. LDP idiots are taking their crayons to the constitution... it will be interesting to see what the mental midgets "forget" to include in their new draft.

Japanese racism stems from the days of isolationism, extended through pre-WWI, WWI, WWII, and onto the present.

Japanese believe in the purity of Japan.. foreigners taint that purity, and therefore are looked down on.

Foreigners are easy to spot, especially when they are doing something wrong.. so in a society where foreigners make up less than 1% of the pop. it's easy to make a scapegoat out of the katakana crew.

Even when it runs counter to the truth. Japanese are a mixed racial stock of Koreans, Malaysians, and Ainu, no matter how much Ishihara wishes it weren't so.

Al's stirring the pot.....

Postby Alcazar » Sat Mar 13, 2004 1:22 pm

They come because their societies don't work and they know life is better here.
Hmmm, this is totally true... They certainly do come become their societies are not as well organised, and as a result, less pleasant to live in. However, this is not because of their 'race', but their respective culture within their home countries. The author is confusing (deliberately) race and culture.

This where the spread of globalisation helps the World: Exporting Western values overseas to better organise them for prosperity and stability. If they are stable and prosperous, they are less likely to keep wanting to come to our countries, which is bad for us in great numbers. If they are stable, we'll buy each others goods instead.

I had an interesting discussion with my father-in-law and his friend one day about Japanese citizenship.

FiL's friend: (Talking about a mutual friend who is half-Japanese, born in America, currently living in Tokyo for the last 15 years) "Do you think he'll take citizenship?"

FiL: "Probably. Most of the other guys in his profession have"

FiL's friend: "How about you, Chris?"

Me: "Why? There's no meaning."

FiL, FiL's friend: :: jaws drop ::

Me: "Look: you two may know I'm a Japanese citizen, but to everyone else I meet, I'll always be foreign. At the most I'll take permanent residency. Plus it takes 5-10 years to become eligible for citizenship, and my Japanese skills just aren't there yet. The U.S. doesn't support dual-citizenship, so why would I cut off an avenue of expansion for very little gain?"

---

Debito's got some real balls of steel to throw away his U.S. citizenship... IMHO he's doing a good thing, and I hope he continues to make waves, but I really don't think enough of Japan to do what he's trying to accomplish. Maybe that's selfish of me, but that's how I feel. :)

Let's see where ol' debito is when the bombs come raining in from NK, or later on, PROC.

And that, my friends, is why I don't give up my citizenship. I pretty sure I would be put at the end of the line for any shelter in Japan, even as a naturalized citizen. My passport and U.S. citizenship get me a ticket to ride on the last remaining American troop ship... 8)

Blinky Shintaro runs for cover

Diene said he had requested a meeting with Tokyo Gov Shintaro Ishihara, known for his nationalistic views and controversial remarks against foreigners

In the United States, even though the White House is now inhabited by what many consider a very rightwing president, there are blacks in his Cabinet and his rebuke to Trent Lott, the Republican senator from Mississippi, cost him his job as majority leader.

Japan has not reached this stage. Japan is an outlier; from the racism viewpoint, it is a pariah state. Racism lies in the very fabric of Japanese society; it is still at its primitive, visceral and atavistic stage. It is so ingrained that Japanese often appear totally bewildered when told they are racist. Being racist and being Japanese are so intertwined that racism is not seen as a form of deviance, but as normal. So Japanese racism is rarely expressed in vituperatively violent form. It is passive, intrinsic, underlying general social behavior. Barring foreigners from joining golf clubs, for example.

He was simply denied an appointment with Blinky. Perhaps he was unconvinced a Senegalese could understand the concept of mottainai.

Blinky's shameless cowardice really does know no limits. :puke:

I hope he gets hit by a Mitsubishi truck and fucking dies. Asshole.
