Foreigners/Minorities in Japan

Postby Ryn » Tue Mar 16, 2004 10:35 am

Hello~

For my modern Japanese history class, I'm writing an essay on minorities and/or foreigners in Japan, but I'm having a bit of trouble coming up with resources. I thought since this forum is basically populated with these type of people, some of you might know of some books or articles that would be helpful for this topic.

Alternatively, I'd like to interview a few people who have lived or are living in Japan now... But since my university seems to insist that everything on the internet is lies, I'll have to double-check on that first.

Thanks a lot!

Quote the FG foreign professors here in Japan discussing these issues at this "serious" site: http://lists.nbr.org/japanforum/

Just scroll through to you find topics on J-minorities.

Better yet just go to Issho.org/ wihich handles FG minority issues and publish papers on those topics which you can quote/cite. Japanese do NOT view us FGs as "minorities ", we're just aliens. :alien:

"Learning to Bow" - is a good resource on Japan and gaijin relations. It is taken from the modern perspective.

Historical Perspective of Japanese Minorities - Talks about the subgroups that make up Japan and Japanese as a society.

Inventing Japan 1853-1964 - another good reference to use.

Likewise, why not interview the members of this board. Devise a set of questions, and ask away. Then use the copy and paste function, and source it using the internet as your source.

Good luck! Sounds interesting.

Wow, thank you for the quick replies and suggestions! I appreciate it!

I was thinking of interviewing people here, but I'll have to check with my TA and/or professor regarding interviews and internet sources.

Thanks again!

As long as internet sources are correctly referenced and footnoted, there should be no problem using them.. it is up to you to decide whether or not the information is accurate or the sources are reliable.

If you get the information from an on-line news-service then they are about as reliable as regular print media.

But quoting something that GomiGirl happened to say on the 5th of October is not a reliable resource to use.. no matter how witty and intelligent 8) but this type of medium is just people's chatter.

This is the same for blogs. These are people's diaries and thoughts.

Bottom line is that you should use your discretion regarding using solely on-line resources. They will be the most up-to date.. but the most accurate is not always the case.

Ryn,

Shouldn't you narrow down your topic a little bit first? Perhaps you already know this, but the treatment of foreigners in Japan is far different from documenting the treatment of ethnic minorities in Japan. In other words, the Ainu/burakumin/resident Koreans/resident Brazilians who were born in Japan are a separate category of people from expatriates who live in Japan.

If you try to combine the two topics, you might find yourself writing a very long thesis.
