Finally, a use for natto is found

Postby Taro Toporific » Thu Mar 18, 2004 3:33 pm

ImageImage 'Natto' eyed to fertilize world's deserts
Kyodo Press / Mar 18
Toshio Hara, an assistant professor at Kyushu University, has a dream of turning deserts into vast green fields by using a resinous substance deriving from "natto" fermented soybeans mixed with sludge containing nutritious ingredients and plant seeds.
His idea is to bury substances generating from natto and sludge in the ground to convert deserts into land covered by vegetation.

Hokkaido agricultural cooperative which wanted to know if natto could be used together with cow dung to produce efficient compost.

I wonder if the initial reason for adding the cow dung was an attempt to improve the smell/flavour. :D

Frankly, I was really disappointed when I first tried it. I was prepared for the most shockingly disgusting thing ever, but it was fine. What a letdown.

As far as I'm concerned, it's another stupid Japanese gaijin myth that a lot of gaijin seem to buy into.

Thank you!! This is what I have said all along. I eat natto all the time.

Not keen on the natto maki from the combinis as they can be a bit skanky if not so fresh.. but fresh natto on rice for breakfast with some good nori and egg is the business!! :P

No NO NO! Well beyond FG's.

The taste does not bother me, but the smell hits me in the guts. Nothing else does this to me other than sitting in a car when another person is puking next to me. I have really tried to get over it with the Mrs DG eating it every morning but some mornings it really knocks me out and I'm openeing windows and all sorts of things.

Is there better brands etc? The worst is when the emergency pack comes out of the freezer and then bunged into the microwave. :puke:
