Let's not get ahead of ourselves here... America's economy is not in "shambles" hardly... The dollar is falling, sure... Greenspan/Snow/polcy makers, don't really care. This makes our products CHEAP in foreign countries.. Japan is trying to stop the yen from appreciating, so Japans products don't become outrageously expensive outside of Japan, thus hurting their economic recovery. The dollar is weak, with the huge deficits we've occured, it's likely to stay that way, until perception changes in the global markets.. It's all just the market shaking it's self out, you remember when the Euro first came out, and EVERYBODY expected it to rise against the dollar... Well this didn't happen, and many many rich investors lost plenty of money, betting it would.. Now look at it! Everything will work it's self out. Massive deficits take their toll on our currency, but all in all it'a good thing for the US, and a bad thing for the countries our currency is paired against... Japan has spent a record amount of money interviening (buying dollars) to try to keep the dollar propped up agianst the yen, but this can only go so far.. Until the dollar stablilizes against all currencies, it will continue to fall against the Yen.

It sucks, when you have to convert your money, however open a currecny trading account, and start profiting from it, instead of watching your money go down the drain in conversions!

I actually like the dollars drop. Now I can send back more money.. unfortunately I have a small amount I'd like to convert from dollar to yen, but at the current rate, I'm just waiting. Once it is back to the 1 dollar to 120+ yen, I am going to cash in.. that is if it ever goes back that way.

Ram: Agreed.

If Japan hadn't been buying dollars so rapidly, the 100 support would have been broken easily by now... The dollar has stabilized a little bit, now it's time to see if it's broken it's downward trend, or is just enjoying a nice short term reversal.. I'm betting on the latter, personally.

I insinuated from your statement, you were implying the dollar still had a long way to fall, versus the yen... Was I incorrect, in what I thought you meant?

Nope I'm hoping (begging) the the dollar has peaked.

The New Zealand dollar posted a fresh seven-year high today and was less than a cent off its all-time post-float high hit 16 years ago.

Well, at least the dollar is up a few more points against the yen...

It was 105 less than a month ago, and now it's up to 109. At least it's not dropping any more...

Greenspan Says Weaker Dollar Will Help U.S. Narrow Trade Gap
United States Embassy, Tokyo, Japan / March 2
The falling dollar will eventually help the United States reduce its huge trade and related current account deficit if the U.S. economy remains open and flexible, the chairman of the Federal Reserve -- the U.S. central bank -- says.

Weak yen 'unfair,' says GM boss
"The amount of intervention in the currency markets by the Japanese central bank is at record levels, " Mr Wagoner told the BBC's World Business Report.

"That is keeping their currency artificially weak against the dollar and the euro, and really reducing the competitive position of the manufacturers' base in Europe and the US.

"We think it's actually an unfair trade practice."

I agree. Come on Japan, play fair! at least until the end of April

March 18 (Bloomberg) -- The yen surged in Asia, heading for its biggest four-day gain against the dollar in six months, on speculation Japan is scaling back sales of its currency.

The yen jumped to 107.15 at 1:46 p.m. in Tokyo

You are still in phat city compared to the time I went to tokyo in around 2000 when it was 88 yen for the dollar. I think a brewskie cost me like $20 and a left nut.

Dollar stumbles as markets eye terror fears, hedge bets on Japan
NEW YORK (AFP) March 18- The dollar stumbled as traders reacted to a terrorist scare in Europe and bet on Japan cutting back on currency intervention.
The euro rose to 1.2391 dollars at 2200 GMT, up from 1.2229 dollars late in New York on Wednesday.
The yen continued to appreciate on expectations that the Bank of Japan will ease its intervention to check the rise of the Japanese currency.
The dollar fell to 106.77 yen from 108.23 Thursday.

Ahhh.. didn't the IMF issue a warning to the U.S in January..?!?

I can just hear the U.S consumer squealing now as the impact of their lower value dollar starts hitting the store shelves and everything becomes even more expensive for them to buy.

JapanBound wrote: Japan is trying to stop the yen from appreciating, so Japans products don't become outrageously expensive outside of Japan, thus hurting their economic recovery.

Ya.. buying U.S T-Bills to boot.. You know what is 'funny' tho, the Lexus RX-300 in America runs about $40k, yet that same model in Japan - the Toyota Harrier - is only around $20k. Count on Japan to do anything in its power to maintain exports, an increasing amount of which is actually going to China.

A 'good thing'..?!? well.. you can cheerlead for the official FOX-News line all ya like but, a lower value dollar will not increase your standard of living - ask Mexico - and really I doubt it will stem the loss of manufacturing jobs to overseas either.

Yup.. and the Japanese will starting using their 'more powerful' value of the Yen to aquire another round of U.S assets.. like high profile real-estate properties and Hollywood movie studios. Seems we've be down this road once before..!!!

Heck, that's what I've been doing. Even at a weaker dollar, at least the American banks give decent interest rates for money market accounts... in comparison, the $40k I parked in my Japanese bank earned a whopping $6 over a year.

I almost had a heart attack when I got my "thanks for investing in us" form letter showing my whopping $6 for the year.

Rie suggested I open "Kuriful" and start loaning the cash out at 30% interest. We already have the cute dog for the commercials... now I need to find some big bruisers to "collect" on the debts. ;)
