One time, me an' Rob went down to Harajuku and shot some gold. We then powered down and were walking back to the train when we saw the ultimate day-glo kids. They (a big group of guys and gals) were rowdy and fun-loving. We asked if we could roll some video, and they said, "but we so hungry". So Rob (no uniform) gave them some pocket change and then ducked into a phone booth. As I was rolling. Rob come back out with all the gear on in full regalia. They started laughing so hard and were so surprised!

Rob was one of them!

Definitely classic Pongi. He asks them their favorite TV shows and comedians. Might wanna save that one for the Pongi DVD though!

oh, i've got the tapes baby, i've got the tapes. we just gotta ask mr. rob if we can release such treasures. they are his property.

even better, i'll try to dig up me 'n rob pongi singing "wild thing" in yoyogi park in 1995, which I cut on 3/4 SP and an Amiga Toaster. This would be Rob reuniting with me in an incarnation of LoveButter - AKA the ROB PONGI BAND. I will call it Butter Unplugged. I think I am wearing a goofy church of the subgenius t-shirt and a boris badenoff ball cap. Geek! This was back when we were skinny too! heh heh. Stay tuned for that.

We were invited to compose and perform the one of the radio soap opera's band's theme song for a "battle of the bands", even though they knew we had no measurable talent.

We recruited this dude named Rob "Pongi" to write and sing the vocals. Pongi was this insane guy from the east coast with a deep psychotic hatred for his job, and the ability to express that psychosis through these wonderful stream of conscious lyrics. For some strange reason, he always wore this helmet with flags stickin' out of it.

Together, we recorded the "Love Butter Theme," which received some radio airplay."

Bon Dio jumps in..."We got excited that our little joke band was getting attention, so we decided to keep it going. However, we soon lost Pongi, who moved to Japan to form a noise band and start this freaky television program on the internet.

Play "The Geek from Walnut Creek". Rob is the "Geek". Actually, it's Don Bon Dio on vocals and Bass, (but Rob did do vocals back in the day). That's Mr. Sparkle playing shitty guitar in a one take send up. Our drummer rocks though.

Originally I shot Japan '95 with a Sharp 8mm camcorder. I need to dub VHS to DV to bring it to you, (or just do a pass-through digitize) but I think I can get it into the ol' TIBook.

rob pongi and superman both have the same goal. world peace and to fight for justice.

superman is reactive, punishing those who have done a bad deed.
pongi is proactive, getting everybody wasted so they won't do bad things in the first place.

They blow all their compensated-dating rewards on cases of Tan-in-a-can and white pearl eye shadow.... and Hilo Hatties hawaiian wear.

Ack... they were a rash on all Tokyo for a while, but when I was back there in September, they were becoming more scarce.... just a few Skanky-Ho's (Don Ho's daughters) hanging out by the love hotels in Shibuya.
