NOVA interview and tag along American boyfriend

Postby lithonia » Wed Mar 31, 2004 6:07 pm

Ok. I have a interview with NOVA in atlanta this month. I have read almost all of the previous posts and don't really care if I am scrubbing toliets in Japan as long as I get there with a job. Damn, that's pretty desperate. I have heard some pretty shitty stuff about Nova, but is it really that bad??? Plus nova is the only place that would even give me a second glance since I don't get my degree til may. I realize I need to kiss some ass, dress well, and bring a sample assignment to the interview. Aside from having a pulse anything else I should know?
ALSO* my boyfriend wants to tag along and live there too but hasnt gotten a degree yet. Is there any program I can get him on so he can come over too or is the way to have him mooch off of me.
Thanks

Depending on how old you are, there is the working holiday visa. I am not sure for which nationalities it is valid.. but I do know that Australians and Canadians have no trouble. It is for 6months but you have to be under 28 (I think??)

Have a poke around your countrys' Japanese Embassy site.

There isn't a working holiday visa for Americans. :(

But here is a Link to the Japanese Embassy in the US.

Hi Lithonia,
Consider leaving the boyfriend behind. I'm sure you'll meet some cute lookin' J-Boyz or a twisted (but very nice) F'd gaijin! Have fun, you're young!

You'll have few experiences in life like moving to Japan - you may think about starting fresh is the point. Good luck at NOVA. Remember, you can move on after you complete your "sentence" there. I wouldn't like it because you cannot date the students!

There is no level of desperation to justify coming here for the sake of a lousy job at a company with a spotty record that may leave you stranded far from home. Why do you feel you need to put yourself through that? Finish your degree at home, explore your job situation in the States, and then check back here once you know what you want to do.

I kinda agree with Kamome. I have met tons of F'ed Gaijin who came to Japan with a crappy job jsut to live in Japan. Knowing the NOVA work schedule. (ie 6-8am, then 10-noon, then 2-4pm, then 6-8pm) they really didn't have time to enjoy Japan, and got bitter quick. Ever considered the JET program? It's probably too late for this year, but you could apply for next year. You have to have a DAMN cheery outlook to survive the NOVA game.

I even PM'ed her advising her to wait and it least make a go for JET. You'll be sharing digs at NOVA(cation) so you can forget about your man but if you're that set on fucking up your life then Go For It. Actually, I think NOVA is ok if the other possibilities have been exhausted but what's the fucking rush? Why are you so intent one taking the one job that they'll promise you before you even have the minimum requirements? You have some strong points in your favor, including four years of Japanese and being young and female. Hold your horses. Japan's not going anywhere.

I think so, but check with the web-site of your embassy in Japan.. remember that google is your friend!!

Alternatively, check out the site for the Japanese consulate in the UK.. or even drop in and see them.. they proabably have some forms for you to read.

I'm a working-holyday visa holder. There are differences between countries in that working-holyday program so you should check it out.
Here's how it is with France. It's a one year visa, the age limit is 30, you need an open airline ticket between your country and japan for the duration of the visa or the equivalent amount in cash. The rest is basic paperwork. It's really easy to get at least in France.
