Can one teach English for just 3 months in Nihon?

Postby Jushin-Thunder-Liger » Mon Mar 29, 2004 6:30 am

As a regular visitor to Japan, i was wondering if there were any companies that would accept an english teacher for just 3 months?
ECC didnt bite, offering me 9 months instead
Im thinking Feb - April, to fit the usual teaching end of term
So anyone know?

I would be very gratefull for any help, so err thanks, i suppose

For just 3 months, you'd most likely be on a tourist visa instead of a sponsored work visa. I doubt anybody wants to get into that kind of legal mess. Why are you only wanting to work for 3 months instead of a longer period?

like you said Caus, a tourist's visa is only for 90 days, and less time consuming. Getiing some other visas means paperwork.

You don't want to work for someone else anyway. Just print up flyers and post them around wherever you live and you'll pick up private lessons. Then you can come and go on tourist visas as many times as you wish. (if one can still get away with this: we could back in my day).

You could possibly just teach individual students for money under the table for 3 months. But you'd be tied down to their schedules and wouldn't be able to travel as much as you want.

Yeah, good idea's about teaching freelance, under the counter.
I have some free time between Jan and April and i am going back to Japan anyway to see old friends, so i would like to make a few Yen while im there.
I might put a web-site together, see what happens.
I should do OK, my Blone Hair and Blue eyes got me a LOT of interest from female english students, when i was there last time
Oh, are people still charging 3,000 Yen/Hour?
Cheers for the advice

You might want to try posting on some websites, here, Dave's ESL, Let's Japan, Gaijin Pot, Gaijin Cafe and whatever classifieds you can find and offer to take over someone's classes for three months. Maybe someone out there wants to go to Thailand or back home for a while but needs to find someone to cover his workload. I know for certain that some smaller companies let their English teachers do that.

PS Picking up privates is a good idea too but it might take a little longer than you think to get it going. Depends on your bankroll and gaijin charm how doable it is.

If you are coming here anyway.. why not try to pick up some bar work.. lots of places hire without a visa and it leaves your days free for playing.

Kamome is right, that private English teaching is fairly demanding on your time.

But don't tell people you are only going to be here for 3 months. You will not get hired..

I thought the going rate was 5,000 yen. Has that changed?

Dude, if it's just for three months, I don't know how you can work and travel simultaneously. For such a short time, it should be one or the other. The minute you try to make some money, you're usually tied down to a particular place.

What about just hitchhiking to various youth hostels around the country? Very little money needed, you'll pick up some Japanese language, and get all the sightseeing you need.

Hell, 2,500yen/hr. ain't uncommon kamome---Why any FOOL wants to come here in the Land-of-Concrete(tm) for that abuse is beyond me.

Anyway, if a student just wanted to hitchhike and walk the breath of Japan for 3 months, it could be be done on 1,000yen a day sleeping at temples and eating post-dated 7-11 bento. See the 88 Temples of Shikoku Pilgramage and stop my rice ranch for a couple meals, laundry and rest.

As I mentioned before I have a Ugandan friend that suceeded in Japan without visa and $500 dollars, so you've got it easy. Ganbareyo!

88 temple Pilgrimage.

I did the first three temples last year during Golden Week.. No I wasn't wearing the white robes.

Shikoku is sensational this time of year. I ended up staying at a fabulous rice ranch (not Taro's) and planted rice and picked beans during a 7 day farm stay. Cost me nothing as I exchanged work for food and board.

Came back with a suntan and well relaxed. Last August, the family sent me a huge sack of the rice that I helped to plant last year - which is really special given the rice shortage this year.

I have to dig out and post the photos of GomiGirl with an obaachan workers hat (you know the kind that tie up with fabric) and gloves picking snow peas to send off to market. 8O

Next time I will go to Taro's rice ranch and show him how good I am on the auto planter.

YES! Come on down!
When the snow peas or stawberries need harvesting, there's ALWAYS need for another hand to help.

I have plenty of money for my visit, and an apartment, but it would be conveniant if i could do a bit of teaching so i have more money for used schoolgirl knickers, the prices are very steep, as we all know.

My friend did this 3 or 4 times back and forth between Korea. On the final time they wouldn't let him get on the plane back to Japan because it was obvious what he was doing. Apparently the airline notified J-customs when he checked in and someone stopped him after that. No refund on the plane ticket either. Eventually after some wrangling for a week or so in Korea they let him back to Japan just to Narita so he could board a flight back home to Canada.
