Only one hair colour is taboo among Japan's most fashionable.

Twenty years ago, if you stood at Tokyo's busiest pedestrian crossing, where Bunkamura-dori intersects Dogenzaka-dori in Shibuya, a bobbing sea of black hair would have swirled around you.
Now, every tone, tint and tinge imaginable is on parade as increasing numbers of Japanese women shun their natural black hair for a lighter, less serious look.

Yep, ya gotta feel sorry for the journalist Simon Rowe covering a story that has him taking taking out dozens of rich Japanese ladies in the trendiest part of town. Too bad he missed the key point about 'Charisma hairdresser' boom in Japan: it was created by Fuji TV to provide cheap filler airtime. He even missed the big scandel a while back in Daikanyama, Land-o-fashion-victims.

Funny that someone posted a thread about Japanese hair styles. I was just thinking today that the chapatsu look seems to be on the decline and that people are starting to go back to their natural black.

Has anyone noticed this or am I completely off?

Actually I have noticed this too. Most of my friends do not colour their hair as a statement.. One friend even dyed her natural hair even blacker and had a straight perm. She didn't have coloured hair to start with, but was concerned about lightening from the sun.

Good. I have always thought that the chapatsu look was ugly. It also never served its purpose--nonconformist fashion statement--because everyone was doing it.

However, it may be a while before Japanese male scouts refrain from the chapatsu look.
