That is so fucked! It's really going down hill for English teachers. If your pay is shit be sure to give shitty lessons. JET is going the way of the dinosaur I'm afraid. I don't know what to say except 8O 8O 8O SHIT

I am all with Assking here. Give them the shittiest lessons you can possibly muster. I mean, be late.. cancel lessons at the last minute for personal reasons. If they ask, tell them you have a spastic colon and sometimes at random it acts up and you have to poop like crazy.

Another thing, is this a part time position? If so, I'd leave immediately after the last lesson. I would offer no extra services, like teaching a club or doing cleaning.. or any of that shit...

If this is a full time position, they have to give you paid holidays AFAIK... what about your insurance? I'd draw up a parallel between the JET programme and what you are getting now, and let them know straight up that you have been cheated....

Another thing, if you get sick of it, drop them like a rock, and go the Nova, interac, Geos, etc... the pay is better than what you are getting AFAIK.

Can you teach on the side or during your time off? IF so, that may supplement your income.

JET is an important program and it costs a fortune.. I think it does a fine job.. though I question the choices in candidates for the job that have been made over the 3 years I have been a Engrish puppet.

I'd tell them to increase teh salary to 3000 yen per hour and include benefits or they can take the job and shove it up their ass....

If they don't like it, let some other dumbass chimp put up with their shit.. :D

By the way,
I just got hired. ANd after taxes and all that shit, including apartment rental, I bring home 270000 per month. So you are definitely getting it up the arse. I get all holidays and paid summers, but I have to be there all the time :(

So maybe, having the summer off won't be so bad, and if you don't have to hang around for 1 second later than the last class, it may not be that bad.. If you can, try to negotiate it with them. They say that is all that is in their budget, but I know for a fact that is horseshit...

I think they'd have to pay you the base salary of a regular teacher, after all you are basically doing that work.

I don't know the particulars of your job, so I can't say as I suggested above to piss it off... but weigh it out, if you are working more than you should for less pay.. but if you work a lot less, and are getting paid.. and have the ability to throw out a few on the side lessons for a 1-2 man a week...

I know most of the teachers at the school(taught with them before some friends) so I can't just screw around as it will just make their lives miserable. They could stand up for me though and let the city know they need to pay better. The problem is the city council not the education board. I guess the council just told them if you want a teacher this is all the money you can have take it or leave it. But it is a joke.

Like I said I made 30 man before and had paid summer etc. Left two years ago and they hired a local gaijin with absolutely no experience. And he is an alcoholic and would show up smelling like sake sometimes. Did no lesson prep etc. But that is what they got because they wanted to go cheap. I recommended a friend of mine but they didn't even talk to him.

I can and do teach on the side. I have around 20-25 students so that helps. But we live in the countryside(Awaji Island wifes hometown) and so the job opportunities are limited. We love the area but the work seems to be getting worse. Maybe I will just have to get serious about opening my own school. I think in the long run their is more money.

Thanks,
Sdskinner

And congrats on the new job!

I understand about not slacking off.. but I would do it in a heartbeat if the pay wasn't where I thought it should be. Perhaps joining the teacher's union? They can help re-negotiate the contract....

Yeah I am done with the JET deal.. and striking out soon on the on my own approach. I look forward to it.. in the future I am going to do one of two, my own eikaiwa... or go for the PhD in Education or Engrish.. haven't decided yet...
:D

20-25 students is quite a bit.. I teach 0 now on teh side, but have the opportunity to teach about 40-45 on the weekends with the new job..

Good luck!

It doesn't matter to them what the ALT does.

The problem is the city council not the education board. I guess the council just told them if you want a teacher this is all the money you can have take it or leave it.

Image I'll let it go for 50 dollars but I'll need the cash upfront.

How can you join a union? And is there a minimum salary for foreign teachers? Or is that just when you sponser someone? I have a spouse visa, does that help me?

And does anyone know if the school is required to have an ALT? Because the city doesn't want one. And do they receive extra money from the prefecture to help pay for an ALT or is it just an added expense?

You could move to Okinawa and teach at one of the JHS's here. They still pay 30man a month and Okinawa is probably a nicer place to live anyway. :)
