Japan's Seiyu opens Wal-Mart style supermarketWednesday April 7, 4:48 PM
NUMAZU, Japan, April 7 (Reuters)- To the average Westerner, it would look pretty much like an ordinary supermarket.
But the newest store of Wal-Mart Stores Inc affiliate Seiyu Ltd is a rare sight in Japan -- just one floor instead of many, with wide aisles, huge trolleys and one long row of cash registers....
First impressions among the residents of Numazu, which has a population of just over 200,000, were mixed. "This is a lot of fun and there's heaps of variety. I've never seen so many types of dog food," said Junko Kubota, a 51 year-old office worker.
But Maki Tsuki, a 37-year-old housewife said she didn't think she would be shopping there that often."I thought there would be more American goods after the tie-up with Wal-Mart but there aren't and I can get most of what I need at my local supermarket," she said.
