Modeling in Tokyo

Postby NeoNecroNomiCron » Wed Oct 22, 2003 11:41 am

I have read some of the older posts about modeling in Japan. As my internship will eventualy end. I am looking for another source of income as I want to stay in Japan forever. Anyway I have been thinking about modeling, it is not just becasue I think that the impresion of every white in japan must be a model. But I actualy was approached in the UK before I left and never took it seriously.

So far I have looked at some sites including Tokyo Models and Bravo , Although I am fairly good looking I dont know if I am goodlooking enough for thoes sorts of agencies.

Also I dont have flashy pictures of myself. And these sites are looking for some pictures.

I have heard there are a few agencies around Harajuku and Shibuya does anybody know of any? I just want to go there and ask them.

Have you ever done any modeling? It is difficult stuff. I can imagine how difficult it is in Japan. The worst part was in Miami when you must be outside in what feels like 30c heat. Then you have those darn studios with way too many lights and not enough AC. I had to worry about my agent stealing my money wich he did. I never found him. Oh well... it was only $800. Not too bad when you think what he could have taken.

I warn you to ask around about agents. I don't know how it works in Japan but you should never need to pay them a cent for anything. You should be able to bring in your own comp card. Never ever go with an agent who requires you to use his guy for photos and comp cards. There should not be a listing fee for web sites. They make money when (and only when) they get you work. Usually between 10 - 20% after the job. They just take it from your total pay. It should never take longer than a month for you to get the pay. At times it may take 6 weeks..but not more. Some may try to trick you if you are new to the business. Try to make a friend who knows it well as the advice they give you will be worth more than you can imagine.

I acutualy did some catwalk, but mostly as a child. As I said in first post I was approached. It has always been an on and off subject with me. Since I was in university I couldnt be bothered with some of the hastle. I has a comp car with one agency then I moved and didnt bother for a while. Then I thought about it again so i gave my original photos that the first agency took, to the new agency. About a month went past and the company closed down suddenly, so I lost my portfolio.(I am still f n pissed(but it was 3 years old I look much better now with a little age))

I know that a good angency with make up a fresh comp card if they think you are worth it. That is why I would like to meet them face to face. A girl said to me harajuku is where all the best agencies are. But not knowing enough japanese to read a phone book, I have been left looking on the net. (so all you get are the flashy agencies that dont do general work)

I tried taking photos of myself, using a timer. They came out laughably bad. Even photoshop cant do anything about them.

A comp card is like a mini port folio. It is between A 5 and A4 size. with an eye catch picture on the front. and a few pictures at the back with your details. the pictures at the back usualy have at leat one close up shot. A full body shot, and an assit shot i.e. what you look best at, if you are good in suits a wedding photo or something similar.

Oh comp if i remember means complementroy so you give it away ...

Seriously , has somebody got any suggestions for me. If you knew how much I wanted to stay in Japan you would understand that I am willing to try anything. Even I was considering a job as a Host, in the back end of the kabuki-cho you know the place right near maro ii men (OI MEN)

Inside Advice
Are you a bit of a good-looker? Or are you planning to blow everyone with your method by starting in skits on SMAPxSMAP? Either way, JMj has some great advice this week for anyone wanting to get into modeling or working as an extra on TV in Japan.
For a list of modeling and TV extra agencies in Japan, look for this article in the November issue of JMj here:

BIG Thanks for the links Taro. While at the tokyo motor show I wanted to ask one of the Gaijin Models where she was based but I was too shy.

I am at a loss of what agency to chose now. There are not so many looking for men and I dont think I can work freelance just yet as I dont have a portfolio. I will look out for castings in the mean time.

Hey don't knock zoolander. That film showed what it takes to be a model. Day in and day out.. makeup, wardrobe... It's a cruel world out there.

I'm not knocking it, it's one of my favourite films! Right now I'm even listening to the film's theme song 'Start the Commotion', by the Wiseguys-- that's the track you hear if you open the Zoolander flash-site.

I also love all the cameo's: The Billy Zane scene, Duchovny and Bowie all add to it.

'Hansel!' I think Owen Wilson was great in it.

Zoolander is a damn CLASSIC!

Hmm, modeling...

Postby PiNkGinger » Sat May 01, 2004 11:50 am

lol Deeefinitely gotta love Zoolander. Hmm, I've actually thought about modeling in Japan, or at least contacting some agencies based out of Tokyo, should I go for it? I need some dansei's opinions!! When I was in Okinawa I was like considered the white of the white people( I was told I looked like a doll, which my hosting student said was a good thing), umm, I was really blue eyes, but I'm only about 5'5". So yo guys, think I have a shot at all? ( me pic to the left) tetsudattekudasai!!

Looks like you've got some Fibonaccis. Just show up at an agency and try out...

Acting/modeling in Tokyo

Postby Mariner » Mon May 17, 2004 11:02 pm

There were some good tips, but sadly most of the agencies recommended are Contract and won't take Freelancers already over here.

I also happen to know a Japanese Businessman about to start a Host site for foreign men.

I would be happy to help anyone out with any questions they might have.

Regards,
