Postby cliffy » Sun May 02, 2004 1:46 pm

Not Japan related much :? BUT if anybody ever has the chance to "council" a hacker, give them a bloody good kick in the balls for me :!:
My computer was attacked buy some maladjusted fu**wit for no good reason, no theft, no key logging or any other 'nasty' was found but All of my files in my hard drive were corrupted to some degree. A FUCKING NNOYING  :!:

And yes to the feminists it may have been a female idiot but most of the found hackers have been male so kick the bastards hard!!!

well, one thing that i have found is that usually, people who fall victim to OMG HACKERS practically ask for it. Too many people leave their wireless unsecured, have no admin password on their computers, and leave the default passwords on the routers. it's not hackers, it's bored assholes taking advantage of stupid users.

I'd have to agree with that.

Do you have Windows?
Do you have no password?
Like to use peer to peer networks?
Have huge diskspace and bandwidth?
Can't be bothered spending money on anti-virus and firewall software?

Well fret no more! We have expert hackers who can completely screw your system up just for the hell of it! And what's more, they will do it for practically nothing! That's right! FREE disk corruption! FREE spyware! FREE spam! and if you make your PC an even bigger target, FREE spam relay host as an added bonus!

But WAIT! THERE'S MORE!

FREE zombie slave for Distributed Denial of Service attacks at no added charge!

it's not just peer to peer networks really. it is also wifi. WEP is easily broken if someone is bored, and people dont protect their routers. 9/10 times when I check, the password is always the default one of the three standard defaults:
dlink: <no password>
linksys: admin
netgear: password

the dead giveaway is when the SSID is the default for the brand.... people just dont secure their network for some reason. shares galore, no MAC filtering on the router, easy or no passwords... a bored wardriver can be in, and fuckup everything in 5 minutes or less if you are too stupid to leave yourself unprotected. I have been on rides with people who did this, and did it to an asshole who did a similar thing to me when he had physical access to my server. you have no idea the legal implications that can happen to you. someone doesnt like you, breaks in, throws kiddie porn all over your drive and calls in a tip. SECURE YOUR NETWORKS IDIOTS.

Using a PC should require a basic license in internet security.

Ok a few more details.
I personaly know 9 10ths of stuff all about programming.
Yes it is windows based, see above
I was trusting others for advice (yeah I know, no excuse).
I have some protective software and use it as best I know.
No peer to peer, I worked that out quickly 8O
BUT, I still feel that hackers who access other peoples property for thrills are assholes! Yes all I got was frustrations and lost no actual property. I know I was lucky but still, pissing me off is a fine use of talents and ability I would like to have, I don't think  All my posts on this subject are a spleen vent with the added bonus of some hints that helped, even the "holyer than thou" barbs :D

Just because you can't see the files doesn't mean you're safe. There are tricks in Win32 (the base programming API in Windows) along with some undocumented low-level techniques to hide processes from the Windows tasklist.

If you don't mind, what did you get with?

all you really need is some kind of network log.. if you are not using any P2P, and your PC accesses the internet at odd times, (make sure you schedule updates and antivirus updates), then you know you've been attacked. I mean, if you computer is sending and receiving data, and you are not doing anything but turning it on... well, that might mean it's time to scan and check, and possibly reformat.

You could use file encryption (if it is a windows XP pro machine):

http://techzonez.com/forums/showthread.php?t=9771&highlight=Encryption

I even made a small reg script to make this as simple as possible at the link above.

That way, you could encrypt the contents of windows folder, or even specific files, and without the password a hacker would be kind of SOL.. not to say it is 100%.... but it is another level of protection.

You might want to invest in a hardware router or firewall. They make both, and they are relatively cheap. I have the former. Seems to protect me from most crap..

And I use a software based firewall (outpost agnitum to be exact)... kind of overkill..

I run several different Antivirus, trojan scanners, and adware programs to make sure my PCs are clean. It's sad that people waste their talents making viruses and hacking, when they certainly could be gainfully employed in a more legitimate environment.

McAfee Virus shield, Updated asap is the only virus protection I have now.
I used to have a beta version of a msn contractor's firewall but lost that in this attack and he is no longer working, due to a major stroke, to replace it. Lavasoft's Adaware and another spyware search and destroy thingy to sweep and clean the main drive. And now the bit for howls of derision, Windows 98 and IE 5, old, not top quality and more than adequate for my needs at this point. Yes I am due for an update but it works, is paid for and untill I decide what I want to upgrade to works.
