Gifts from students

Postby DrBru » Thu May 06, 2004 12:27 pm

Some of my students, they are mostly 40-70 years old, gave me quite expensive gifts, worth 5000 Yen or more.
I think I should give them something back, but I only see them when they are in a group with other students. So giving a gift to just one would be rude, right? Or should I even give them something back?
They know I'm poor, after all...
I have brought Omiyage for everybody countless times.

There are different rules when a bunch of people give their teacher or boss gifts. I would think a inexpensive but thoughtful gift with a hand-made note would suffice.

On the other hand, if you're like me, writing all those notes and buying, even cheap, gifts is a hassel you could do without.

I don't think your students are expecting anything in return, but it would be nice to give them some kind of small gift as a gesture. What about something from your own country next time you go back?

I gave my 1 and only student a "Real" David Beckham autograph, that i wrote myself, while i was in Yoshinoya 1 morning, we slept together soon afterwards.
Now she doesnt want to pay for her lessons, i can't make up my mind as to who got the best out of that deal

I think as long as your gift is thoughtful it won't matter how big or small it is. After all it's the thought that counts, also they if they know you don't have much money they probably aren't expecting too much, if anything at all really. However if you could give them a little something, maybe even as a group, i'm sure they'd be greatful for your generousity.

Hmmm, I think in that scenario, the girl should keep paying.

Instead of English, she's now paying for the cubic-size that there's no way she'd be able to find amongst the indigenes (that's what happens if you don't eat your bread-crusts people 8O).........demand and supply etc :D

There's only one of you, and millions of J-girls. You need money too. At least make her your 'grocery-fairy' or something...... :!:
