Yep, whale was one of few edible meats that was served in my company lunchroom in the early 80s. Most of us have eaten it and the topic has been covered quite a few times. Now that I've eaten whale with some regularity, I wanna move up to grilled breastfed children. :twisted:

Just behind/next-to/inset the Shibuya 109 Building on the street leading to Tokyu Dept. Store is a whale cafe that most Western jouralists go to write puff-pieces about whale eating. Just say you're from Norway when you sit down to eat.

Really? I heard it tasted like shit, and the reason the younger generation couldn't 'appreciate' whale meat was because of the taste, not PC reasons...

Is it tender, tough, rubbery, etc.? Taste like chicken?

I have had it resently [again]. Its ok, ever so slightly salty and ever so slightly fishy[I guess the whale diet] tasted ok bit like white meat[not that kind :P]

There are a good few yakitoria's that sell it. The same one i go to sells scorpions. But they put so much spice in it. It pretty much tastes like spice and salt[like everything else in Japan].
Am I still not allowed to have a sig?

Normally it's like steak (it's a mammal). I've grilled it in Kochi with BBQ sauce and my alien guests never noticed the differience with the beef loin tips.

HOWEVER....
Whale "bacon" at weddings is an Eskimo experience.
Likewise, dolphin is YUCKY dark meat, full of PCBs, heavy metals, etc.

I've been to that place in Shibuya a couple of times. It's appropriately called Kujiraya. To me whale tasted like a cross between steak and liver which is probably why I liked it. Out of all the dishes I tried I like cooked whale steak the best. I was least impressed with the sashimi.
