S. Korean students stomp Japanese high schoolers

Survey shows S. Korean students more confident, active in English
Yomiuri Shimbun / 11 May
Compared to their Japanese counterparts, South Korean high school students feel more confident about using their English-language skills and enjoy more opportunities to do so in their daily life, according to an analysis of the results of a Benesse Corp. survey released in mid-April. ....

Ummm, yeah. Considering that 99% of the "daily life" usage of English for Korean high school students consists of yelling,

"HELLOOOOOO!"
"NICE TO MEET YOU!"
"HAPPY TOGETHER!"


at random foreigners on the street, I don't think the Japanese kids have much to worry about.

we saw a cool statistic that one of my classmates put together... out of 50 south koreans, there was a tendency to be 10% less accurate in usage of the copula in 10th grade, when compared to 8th grade. this is using the same course strategy and the same students over time.

Actually, that's better than Japanese being sullen and withdrawn in English class (and life). You would think the SHAME of Korea ALWAYS beating Japan on the TOFL Test would cause some rethinking here...but nah, it's only enRish.
