Uneasy parallels
An Internet radio broadcasting station of North Korean defectors, "Free North Korea Network," is on the verge of stopping broadcasts due to various threats it has suffered from since its inauguration less than a month ago. The Institute of North Korea Studies that provided an office for the broadcaster has recently asked it to vacate the office. The institute explained, "Since the station started broadcasting, many people visited the institute in groups to protest its broadcasts violently and telephone calls threatening bombing and terror attacks were received often. We had no other choice but to ask the station to leave the building." In a country under free democracy, how can such an absurd incident take place? And yet there is not a single word heard from the authorities concerned. Who will defend the North Korean defectors, whose freedom is exposed to violent threats?
When all the older people are dead and gone, watch out Japan, 'cause your neighbor is run by lunatics.

I have spent about 15 days a month in Korea over the last 2 years and the attitude of some of the Koreans is surprising. They actually believe that the North is peacefull and wants re-unification. The USA is causing all the problems on the peninsula is a comment I have heard often outside of work. All Koreans just want to unify is another comment I have heard often. I think when the North sent their all female/beauty cheerleeding squad to the Asian games in S.K. half of the males starting thinking with the other head.

It is surprising that the younger generation in Korea can be so blind. The north still sends spies over the border and for all of Pres. Rohs efforts the Sunshine Policy is a failure. The South is one of the few countries keeping the North alive and the DPRK is still carrying out military operations aimed at invading/occupying/incorporating the South.
Years of sunshine policy (money wasted on the North) and not one discussion of reducing the military tension.

I really hope of the sh*t hits the fan on the Korean peninnsula I am not in Japan. With the lax attitude of the J-Police/Self Defense Forces/Intel Services I suspect that there are many N.K. military plants here who will carry out massive coordinated attacks on infrastucture with the assistance of many N.K. Zainiti.

Oh well, enough of this rant. Finish the last Tall Boy and off to bed. Early morning flight to Korea, back in 8 - 12 days...

If that's what they want, then they should put it up for referendum. If it passes, the United States should offer a one-time amnesty to any South Koreans that want to leave SK, then pull out the military and cancel the SOFA.

The reports and books I've read suggest that, while not dramatic in effect, the Sunshine Policy has had a positive effect on the whole. Actions have reactions; to suggest that the Sunshine policy is a failure because the North still carries out covert actions in the South (and East) is over simplifying things, I think.

The trouble with the Sunshine Policy is that the goals are not clear. If South Korea wants reunification, they really haven't started laying the groundwork for how they'll be accepting their northern relatives.

I really think the goal is to get North Korea to enslave their people as cheap labor for big business in the South (Samsung, Hyundai) so that those businesses can compete with China.

I agree.

But how can reunification occur when the North's idea is bringing its communist paradise to the South? Also, the tensions of the status quo prevent this region (Japan and China included) from growing in economic strength - something that goes U.S. interests as has been pointed out by many analyists.

[Sigh.] I guess I'll just have a beer. :?
