Everest Kills Descending Obasan. :(

Postby GuyJean » Fri May 21, 2004 5:01 pm

Everest Cimber Dies After Reaching Summit
http://edition.cnn.com/2004/WORLD/asiapcf/05/20/japan.everest.death.ap/index.html
Shoko Ota, 63, had made the summit with a guide and a fellow climber on Thursday, Tokyo-based Adventure Guides Co. said in a statement.

But Ota became unable to move and lost consciousness during their descent, about 350 meters (1,120 feet) from the summit of the 8,850-meter (29,035-foot) mountain.

The team's leader, Kenji Kondo, later confirmed that Ota had stopped breathing and lost her pulse.

:( That sucks..

Getting up is only half the climb with Everest.

I know most people never think 'bout it but the 80% of the accidents occur on descent. But hey. I've have heard that these guys sometimes run guided-tours up Fuji, so check out the fun! http://www.adventure-guides.co.jp/index.html

From what I remember of 'Into Thin Air', the descent (at least, the initial descent right after reaching the summit) is more dangerous in part because it's getting darker and colder as you race to get back to camp by nightfall, but the mental and physical effects of oxygen deprivation are getting steadily worse.
I have a blog. Last update: August 18, 2013.

Great book! A lot of climbers apparently are all to willing to push too long and too late to reach the summit, only to find that it's too late to make a safe descent...
