Lassie Japan link

Postby Mulboyne » Sat May 22, 2004 1:12 am

A while ago a mate of mine tried to tell me that there had been a Lassie film set in Japan but he didn't know the details
This sounded deeply unlikely and I certainly couldn't find anything in the files so I assumed he was wrong.
More recently, another film guy told me that it wasn't a Lassie film as such but a character from Lassie who was in a Japan film. He too couldn't recall a name.
Obviously we have some pretty dull conversations.

I suppose I should try and track this down and, since, this post has just reminded me so I thought I'd ask if anyone knows anything?

If you just need temporary access, you can get a free 14 day trial. The print edition is back in my office, which gives me access to the online version.

Thanks! My kobun, Brian Bano (actor) has been trying to horn in on this production.

Variety wrote:...Shochiku has acquired Japanese rights to family drama "Lassie" from Classic Media....
.... an adaptation of Eric Knight's 1940 novel,... Lassie ... sets out on a 500-mile journey to get back to her family.....
....in pre-production, will be directed by Charles Sturridge and produced by Francesca Berra and Selwyn Roberts.
Shochiku recently released "Quill," about a Labrador retriever who begins life as a seeing-eye dog.

Getting into the movies

Postby Mulboyne » Mon May 24, 2004 2:43 am

IMDBPro says nothing about this one. I know some people who were involved with Quill so if they have any leads, I'll pass them on.

"The Bang Devils" looks like it will be optioned along with the ones mentioned earlier Here

I doubt all this stuff will actually get made but there ought to be a bit more work around.

I gotta like the plot line of Bang Devils. :)

[Bang Devils] Book Description
If you commit a crime and nobody catches you -- is it really wrong?
For Chris Ryan and Jessica Romano, two Americans living in Japan, life is like a movie. Money comes easy when you're an "exotic" Westerner. Sex comes even easier. With every need instantly satisfied, the greatest worry is growing restless....So when a wealthy Japanese businessman, overcome with too much whiskey -- and too much Jessica -- boasts that he secretly keeps a fortune in cash in his home, Jessica enlists Chris and her boyfriend, Taro, to help her execute the perfect kidnapping.....

Forgot that!

Postby Mulboyne » Mon May 24, 2004 12:16 pm

Nice spot - and I've even read the damn book.

Actually, its not too bad. The author pays tribute to Elmore Leonard and that's the tone he wants. Mainly set in Osaka which makes a change.

As far as I recall, the characterTaro is 1/2 Japanese 1/2 Philippino. Or Brazilian (instead of Philippino).
