The Environment Ministry has designated 42 foreign species, including Shanghai crabs--a popular item in Chinese cooking--for control under the Invasive Alien Species Law.
American minks and bullfrogs also are to be subject to controls.
The ministry will solicit opinions from the public and officially designate the named species as subject to control under an ordinance before imposing a ban on importing, breeding or selling the animals.
Shanghai crabs, or Chinese mitten crabs, have been imported as a foodstuff and farmed in Japan in fallow fields. However, if they escape and establish themselves in the wild, they could breed with domestic mitten crabs and cause soil erosion.
When the regulation is enforced, restaurants will require ministry approval to import the crabs, and individuals will be banned from purchasing live crabs. In addition, crab farms will be subject to tough requirements.
