I'd kick Ms Ecuador out of bed just for that bitchy look on her face.

That page has good links to photos of the other contestants and I agree that there are not many I'd kick out of bed either but, then, this one's a little scary ...

There are all kinds of people in Jamaica, actually. A majority are poor and black for sure, though.

Today in an editing class I taught was a Lebanese Jamaican. I was surprised too!

She schooled me by saying, "In Jamaica we have a saying,--From many, comes one".

Now get me to Sunsplash on time!

:) the ma.e.ku.u.pu.u is a bit too much i agree - and the caption: " Miss Japan, Eri Machimoto, wonders whether the twigs were overdoing it / AP"

its not just that photo either - she has a puss on her face in others too..

however, the other latin ladies are marvelous - columbia and puerto rico are especially fantastic :love2:

thats cool - any lebanese people ive met have been very friendly.

there was actually a Jamaican food and music festival in Yoyogi Koen last Sat and Sun - anyone else go? - the Jamaican Jerk BBQ Chicken was Orgasmically Delicious - from now on im only gonna BBQ meat thats been soaked in rum and is smothered in Jamaican spices.

the queue for the jerk chicken was huge at one stall and while i queued - there was a fat jamacian momma coming up the line asking what people wanted to eat - chicken or fish & how many - and this texan sounding guy further up the line asked if there was any pork - and SHE FLIPPED OUT! - talking about Jah, Babylon, Zion and How she "dont eat no swine, boy!" Priceless! :P

Jamaican National motto: "Out of Many One People"

Jamaica is almost entirely black, with the majority of the population being descendants of African-imported slaves. There is a significant minority of Asian and Indian immigrants, as well as many people of mixed racial background.Whites compose a tiny minority, less than 1% of the population. However, they have historically played a large role in the nation's political and economic development.

I know Taro's already covered this year's Miss Universe here and over at 3Yen but the story still seems to be rumbling along. This story from a Singapore site looks at the alleged translation controversy and the disappointment in Asia that Kurara Chibana didn't win. It also answer's Ultra's question in the first post in this thread with the detail that Akiko Kojima won the crown back in 1959.

Given the fuss over Chibana's ninja outfit, it is interesting to look back at the 2003 Miss Japan, Miyako Miyazaki, saying "My national costume is Ninja." Miyazaki, who came in the top 5 herself, apparently acted as advisor to Chibana for the finals. The national director for Miss Universe in Japan, Ines Ligron, ran an English language blog leading up to the competition and gave some background to the ninja design. Here's a picture her son will probably want in a few years' time:

Wouldn't this be the equivalent of sending a bunch of Miss America hopefuls to the Baghdad green zone? Or maybe like sending the Miss India hopefuls to Kashmir?

Ahh. I know of YBF very well then, though I didn't know what I had at the time.

And by the way, my YBF is in remission. I just hope I don't have a severe outbreak when I get to Japan in December.

Behind the Paper Screen / Japanese beauty fit for global consumption
Part II of II
The Daily Yomiuri, Sept 14, 2006
.....The samurai-inspired costume that Kurara-san wore during the Miss Universe contest is a bold move to appeal to the global taste for kitschy-cute. Her costume, which Japanese observers have quickly named aka-ninja, or "red ninja," is, basically, a bright red minidress that looks like a warrior's armor, with the sides of her short "skirt" split open to show off her shapely legs. She wore this dress with a pair of bright-red platform sandals, and her hair tightly pulled back in a ponytail. And to kick up the costume's impact a notch, Kurara-san pulled out and pointed a long sword at the audience when she went onstage.
It is an anime-esque mix of "Japanese" components (armor, sword) pasted onto a basically Western costume (minidress, platform sandals) and ambiguous gender-coding (color red and skin exposure connote the feminine, while armor and sword represent the masculine). They add up to a sort of hybrid look that is "Lara-Croft-Meets-Kunoichi (or female ninja) on Takeshita Street."...more...

In Britain, the Miss World contest has always been better known than Miss Universe and it claims to be bigger. According to the Wiki entries, though, Miss Universe is more popular in Latin America and Asia. Here's the 2006 Miss World Japanese entrant, Kazuha Kondo.
...Kazuha was born in Tochigi, an area known for its distinct and unique culture which has been affected by its isolated location and long history. It has an amazing four seasons and a wide variety of scenery and customs...

The winner will be decided at the end of this month in Poland. It doesn't look like there has ever been a Japanese winner of Miss World. Erina Shinohara was last year's contestant in China. Interview here. It seems she was coached by the same Ines Ligron who was behind Kurara Chibana in the Miss Universe contest. Although she originally worked just for Miss Universe, it looks like she now does the Japan end of both competitions which seems slightly odd. Here are her thoughts on beauty queens in Japan:
Ines adds that Japan is a country where it is not as easy to “find” someone who can win Miss Universe. "In countries like Venezuela, India, the Philippines, Puerto Rico, Mexico, or Trinidad & Tobago, pretty girls at an early age dream of becoming a “beauty queen”. Their culture teaches them from an early start to speak out, to be glamorous, and to turn heads. In Japan instead, young women grow up being told to blend in, to look like others, to remain humble and conservative...Since 2003 when Miyako Miyazaki placed 4rth runner-up, “Miss Japan” has always been a favorite at Miss Universe. But since then, Japan has not placed even in the top 15, and I know why. Ninety percents of the scores are based on the communication skills during the preliminary interview. The two previous delegates did not have enough confidence and energy for the big wow."

The Miss World Japan Site is a fairly basic affair and the winner was chosen during a charity event at the Tokyo American Club so it doesn't look like the event has much of a profile in Japan compared with Miss Universe.
