There is one remote possibility that makes me shudder: to launch an attack on the North, one would have to move one's troops out of range of the North's artillery batteries. Blah, blah, blah. October surprise. Blah, blah, blah. Can't change a horse in mid-stream (unless you've actually tried just that). Blah, blah, blah. I think french fries covered in cheese curds and gravy is the Prime Minsiter of Canada, but at least I'm president again. 8O

I don't see the big deal.. I thought most South Koreans hated the US? You'd think they'd be cheering in the streets.

Now Big Daddy Kim can come over and have some Seoul Kim Chee.

So when are they going to pull troops out of Okinawa? :?

There's a security vacuum either way, so why did the US decide that only the troops in SK were unnecessary?

That they aren't well liked around the world is nothing new; but they wouldn't give up their strategic interests out of spite.

[quote="DJEB"]That they aren't well liked around the world is nothing new]Are you kidding? This administration? Spite and malice are their only motivations! Were you asleep during Rumsfeld's "chocolate making countries of Europe" remark?

This U.S. administration single-handedly showed Europe why the E.U. needs their own independent military force. Now *that* is a strategic mistake, far more than relocating American troops from a hostile country (South Korea).

Okinawa doesn't have nearly the amount of combat troops that South Korea does.

Also from the article - "However, he said the announcement that the U.S. will shift 3,600 troops stationed here to Iraq had nothing to do with the overall withdrawal plan but rather indicated the tough situation facing the U.S. in Iraq."

This shows you just how fucked up the Iraq situation has gotten. Korea used to be the one "safe" place to get stationed. If you got sent to Korea, you knew that no matter how bad things got somewhere else, you couldn't be deployed to another area. (At least, not until your tour was up and it was time to get relocated.) Not anymore.

They've already moved some troops from Korea to Iraq, it just hasn't been publicized.

That wouldn't be allowed, I'm sure. The prevention of any nation or allied regions growing into a force which could challenge U.S. hegemony has been unofficial strategy for years, but is now spelled out in the Bush Admin's National Security Strategy. I doubt the current kakistocracy would allow any foreign challenge to their [Leo] Straussian rule.

And how will the U.S. stop it? France is already moving towards that very thing, and they've positioned themselves as the weapons dealer for China once the E.U. repeals its ban.

I really can't see Americans sent to fight Western Europeans just because Bush II doesn't like it... and it won't matter since I'm betting there won't be a second term, OBL or no OBL.

Cool word, dude!

2 entries found for kakistocracy.
kak·is·toc·ra·cy ( P ) Pronunciation Key (kk-stkr-s, käk-)
n. pl. kak·is·toc·ra·cies
Government by the least qualified or most unprincipled citizens.

If the world decides to team-up and make America number two then number two we'll be. It's probably the best thing that could happen to us. No matter what they do we still invented rock'n'roll and France will still suck.

This is why I can't get a job as a kakistocratic  neoconman. I was merely starting what the National Security Strategy says. They might start a trade war they know they'd win, or give some favour in the UN (including quasi-UN financial bodies). I don't know, but not everything needs to be played out in the arena of force.

I think it's great. The more countries the US military leaves, the more places I have to vacation without being treated like crap as an American. We'll always have places like Guam and Gitmo that we annex indefinitely (thanks, Spain!).

These people are unbelievable. They've been having demo after demo bitching about America for years and now that the USA wants to split they cry like the little bitches they are.

South Korea unhappy with planned US troop pull-out

Media reports said South Korea wanted a delay of several years in the plan for the biggest troop withdrawal from South Korea since the Vietnam War and its first troop pullout from the country in over a decade

The timeframe should be pushed back to between 2007 and 2113 to allow South Korea to complete a 10-year plan to upgrade its own military forces, according to some reports.

I really hope that's just a typo.

Oh, I also wanted to say:

Maybe they're different demonstrators  I agree with you though.. South Korea seems a little knee-jerkish, to me, on most policies..

So, where does everyone think the troops in Korea and Okinawa are going? To the Bush big fuckup]real[/i] weapons of mass destruction, who has been actively selling WMDs, and possesses missiles capable of reaching the US, get's free rice from Japan and a cleared playground for all the lil' Kim droids to play...

We can't afford 4 more years of this idiot..

Knee jerk to say the least. After those two girls or whatever were accidentally run over by an American military vehicle (was it a tank or just a truck?) the entire country was on and on for weeks with anti-Americanism Yankee go home and so on.

So, where does everyone think the troops in Korea and Okinawa are going? To the Bush big fuckup; Iraq.

S. Korea to Deploy 3,600 Troops to Iraq

Opposition to sending troops to Iraq has been rising amid increasing violence in the war-torn nation. Seoul has portrayed the dispatch as a way of winning U.S. support for a peaceful end to the North Korean nuclear crisis.

At this point it's surprising anyone would be willing to get into that mess.

Yeah, but think of all the cool protests they can have for the duration of the deployment!

I swear, protesting must be one of the top 10 industures in Korea. People here will take to the streets over anything. Hell, just this week there was a protest about the "gomi dumplings."
