I heard that the system is running on Windows. Someone will hack it and get the data. What will the government do then? This whole plan is very ill-advised. If the data is compromised it may make identity theft very easy to do. :x

Okay, I don't get this:
The Yokohama government has asked its Kanagawa Prefecture counterpart to delete information on their residents sent last month in preparation for the full-scale operation. However, Kanagawa Gov. Hiroshi Okazaki said it will be difficult to delete information on the 3.45 million Yokohama residents in its database, as it takes over 40 hours to do so

Here's the simplest SQL I could think of:
Code: Select all
drop from BIG_BROTHER where city EQU 'YOKOHAMA';

If they want optimization, just bring the database offline and turn off transaction logging. The other trick might be selecting all entries not in Yokohama and dumping them to a file, then dropping the original database and importing the saved data... none of this should take a human 40 hours on a decent computer with a knowledgeable IT person... a script can run it over a day and a half in batch mode. :roll:

Well, can't they change the law?

If the Japanese really care about this Big Brother stuff, they should throw the Jimento out on its ear and vote in Minshuto with the mandate that they completely dismantle the system.

Politics doesn't work that way: the home affairs minister is a Jimento cabinet minister, while Nakada is an independent running operations at the local level.

Hmmm... sounds like they are. Repeat after me: "Peace Preservation Law". Now that they have information on who lives where... it's just a matter of time.

::dusting off the lugguage:: good thing I kept my American citizenship (at least Ashcroft hasn't pushed something like this through yet). 8O
