Tokyo - More Japanese committed suicide last year than ever before as poor economic conditions drove greater numbers to end their own lives...
.....Suicides rose 7.1% to 32 082 in 2003 from 29 949 the year before, the Health Ministry said. It was the sixth leading cause of death after cancer, heart disease and other illnesses.

Interesting comment from a Japan Today reader:

To my amusment they had a scientist on the news tonight saying that he had to be traveling at least 14 kph when he left the balcony to travel the 9m away from the building.

That's one speedy fall! I don't think you could even get that kind of distance from standing at the edge and pushing off real hard. (Not from 9 floors up, anways.)

Also, re: the picture, anybody who's played Mario Bros. knows you've got to get some "up" in your jump if you're going to reach the flag and get the max points and fireworks.

Acording to the laws of physics, he was "accidentally" running at 14km/h when he left the balcony.

Cool ride, though - hitting the fence, doing a little spin over the top and landing safely on the ground. Maybe he was trying to do that...
