Google Watch Watch!

Well, I've read Google-watch and Google-watch-watch. The latter site doesn't even address the Google-watch's concern, which is consumer privacy. Gmail apparently is structured such that people basically build up a dossier on themselves that, under the terms of Google's disclosure policy, could theoretically be searched by the government. According to G-watch, the structure of the cookie that Google places on your computer also links your searches to your identity in a process that I can't accurately explain. There was also a complaint that the cookie sometimes brings up advertising that is inappropriate to the content of the news story you might be reading.

Anyway, G-watch-watch just attacks the dude's motives (he has a beef with Google because his website gets a low page ranking), but does nothing to address what appears to me to be serious questions about Google's privacy policy. I'm not sure I would want to sign up for g-mail at this point.

Per Google's gmail privacy policy:

When you visit Google and create a Google account, we set and access cookies on your computer. We use cookies for a number of reasons, such as recognizing you when you visit the site, displaying the site according to your chosen user settings for language, and maintaining the security of your account. Google may share cookie information among its other services for the purpose of providing you a better experience. For example, you may use your Gmail account to access other Google services such as Google Groups or Google Answers. We may also use the cookies to collect aggregated information about the use of Gmail to maintain, analyze and improve the service.

We believe our cookies improve the quality of our services. If you prefer, however, you can reset your browser so that it refuses all cookies, or notifies you when a cookie is being sent. Although you will still be able to use some parts of Google, other parts of the site – including Gmail – may not be available if you refuse cookies.

Log information. When you use your Gmail account, we collect certain information (the same information that most web sites log when they are accessed). This information, contained in the "header" of your request to access the Gmail page, usually includes the browser type you used, your Internet Protocol address, and the date and time of day. In addition, we log the unique ID provided by our cookie and the url of the last site you visited.

So the best thing to do is to refuse cookies until you decide to login to gmail. Once you log in to gmail, just use it for mailing purposes. Once you're done, logout and delete all cookies on your system. A PITA but for those concerned about privacy, it's about the best a person can do.

On a side note, I've searched for my gmail name and account in google and found nada results.

I think another solution I read about is to have two browsers installed on your computer and use one of them strictly for accessing Gmail and the other for general web surfing to avoid Google "linking" your searches to your Gmail account. But both solutions are a pain in the ass. I've tried shutting off cookies before and it greatly diminishes the experience because a lot of websites refuse to let you view their content if you refuse cookies.

Also, one of the bloggers who ultra linked to mentioned that he's getting tons of spam in his Google email account. That's hardly an improvement over Yahoo, which I now have to use as a spam filtering account.

The guy in that blog has created and published his account as a Honeypot. Which means the ONLY reason he has created that account is so that he can get spammed and test Google's Spam Filters.

He is publishing this email ID all over the internet just so that Spambots can pick it up.

And the filters are working pretty well, check out his site.

You are right on the money Ultra. Like I said, almost everyone has the same TOS, Google is the first provider to explicitly mention what they can do with the information stored on their servers.

From reading that, I could understand what you are saying. I'm just not into all the hype. I'll never use 1gigabyte of email in 10 of my lifetimes.. no way.
:D

Guess I'll be able to judge it better when I get an opportunity to use it.

The thing is, by the time it goes public, someone may have already registered as Big.Booger@, so you'll be stuck with Big.Booger6969@.

How'd you get invites already? I think we got ours from the same person on the same day, but I've yet to get any invites. Have you been using the service much?

I don't really know when I got them.I expected an e-mail but there's a link under the search button(didn't even notice it first) saying: Invite a friend to join Gmail!
I've only sent a couple of "test mails" so far so, maybe I'm just lucky?
