Seoul Subway beats Tokyo's

Postby Taro Toporific » Fri Jun 18, 2004 5:15 pm

Image Seoul Subway Fights Jumping Suicide Rate
Guardian, UK - 18 June
... Electronic boards inside subway cars and platforms flash the sign:
``Giving up your life will inflict an unbearable pain on your family and the society!''
Statistics show 13,005 South Koreans killed themselves last year, more than the 12,458 who committed suicide in 1998 at the height of the Asian financial crisis, a traumatic period for the nation of 48 million people.
The suicide rate is marginally higher than in neighboring Japan, where 32,080 people killed themselves in 2003. Japan's total population is roughly 126 million. ..
Do NOT look at this blood-&-gore color picture of the suicidehere.

Nice pic. That looks pretty uncomfortable, though. Not enough headroom.

The color one reminds me of a motorcyclist I had to retrieve from between a retaining wall and an support of Wells Bridge for my grandfather, the Cook County coroner. It was prettty rough cause I was only 8 years old and the parts weighed as much as me.

You were 8? This is disturbingly fucked.

Young and nimble and always willing to be a help after school...it was the family biz, so to speak. It is just meat. Are ya scared of hamburger?

Postby Caustic Saint » Fri Jun 18, 2004 6:22 pm

The Guardian wrote:Between the roar of incoming trains, the soothing strains of Beethoven's ``Fur Elise'' or Ben E. King's ``Stand By Me'' float across the platforms of Seoul's labyrinthian subway network.

The music fades and a preacher-like male voice intones: ``Dear passengers, let's think again about the parents and sisters and brothers we love and the preciousness of our life.''

I haven't been on the subway in a couple of months. I may have to go for a ride this weekend and check out the tunes. :D

``The goal of our 'music therapy' is to soothe the minds of potential suicides. Experts say it works on animals.''

Oh, please tell me I'm not the only one who finds that exceptionally hilarious - especially after riding the subways both here and in Tokyo.

It`s no joke; music is a powerful tool!

My critters are always going out, buying cheap smack and playing with the guns when I do a `24 hr Enka marathon`.

They`re happy when I play jazz.

(Oops, sorry, that was Enya.... )
