Working holiday program not working

Postby Taro Toporific » Mon Jun 21, 2004 2:55 pm

Image Fewer foreigners on working holidays
The Asahi Shimbun / June 21The working holiday program has lost its allure among Australians, New Zealanders and Canadians. Far fewer than ever are taking advantage of the program to stay in Japan.
The association points to the economic slump and falling wages for English teachers as big reasons for the decrease....
Compared to the ``golden age'' of 1991 and 1992, the number of Australians fell two-thirds in 2003. In the same period, the number of New Zealanders fell three-quarters, and Canadians by half.

Why not open it up to people from the US? Seems an easy way to get more people. If the number of applicants from the pool is shrinking, widen the pool.

Oh wait, that'd make sense...

That's the best news I've heard in years. The worst people I ever met in Japan were Aussie working vacationers. They spoil it for all zainichi gaijin with their crass behavior.

I'm a zainichi (lifer or long-termer) gaijin and I like to behave very crassly. Aussies are my favorites because they know how to have a good time. Your opinion sucks. Go back to GaijinPot or whatever turdsucking goodie-goodie website you came from.

I blame the fact that many Japanese people lump all gaijin together in one group and don't look past the actions of a rotten few. It's a failure on the part of society, not on the part of a few (thousand?) asshole gaijin. This is compounded, of course, by the fact that in the first place you look like my avatar in the minds of many Japanese people.

I really don't think things would improve much for gaijin even if the pricks settled down.

Note: I do not condone crass behavior, rough housing or tomfoolery.

I don't have a problem with people having fun, just with people being pricks.

Even them I'm not so concerned about...

But the anti-fun police? That's a real institution here, isn't it?

If even the Canucks and Kiwis, the great native-English-speaking economic refugees of the world, don't want to come to Japan, I doubt many Yanks would, even if Nippon tossed a few working holiday visas their way. Well, maybe a few Utahns, but them boys is already doin' the missionary thang. Orgazmo, anyone?

I think you're over looking how tiny their populations are compared with the USA.

I think with these visa things it is a reciprocal issue. I.e. the US would have to reciprocate if Japan was to allow 3 year working visas for US citizens. I just don't see our State Dept. doing anything like this when they have bigger fires to put out.

One also gets screwed being a US citizen in Japan when it comes to driver's licenses. People from some nations can transfer their license over with a minimum of work and money. US folks have to go through the whole damn rigamarole. I am very annoyed by it. And by the high prices for everything car-related in Japan. But there is so much that you can't do without a car here... ugh.

Don't know much about geography? Not AK!

(Dingo goes Googlin'...)

Got DAMN, he's right. USA: about 300 million; Canukistan: about 30 million.

And here I'd thought it was the other way around!

Say, AK, I bet a keener like you would like some extra homework. Let's empirical! Go out and count the number of shabby-suit-wearing Canadian Engrish teachers you see (listen for the "eh's," "aboots," and...well, you've seen Terence and Philip). Now count the Yank Engrish teachers. Take your time - dingo's got babies to eat, but that can keep until last order.

...

Okay, done? Now, direct extrapolation of the two countries' population ratio should yield a count of about 1 Canadian for every 10 Yanks. But, by golly, it almost seems like the inverse: the Canuck economic refugees - er, Engrish teachers - seem to be statistically overrepresented. Is it because of that fancy working holiday visa program? No doubt...to a certain extent. But it's also that if you waved a bunch of working holiday visas in front of folks in, say, Winnipeg and Milwaukee, dingo would wager you'd probably get more takers in Winnepeg, in both absolute and relative numbers.

See, the thing is, the economy's just not as shitty in the lower 48.

You're right. There wouldn't be boatloads of American white trash coming over to make 250,000 yen a month on 30 hours a week and to trade in their fatass trailer park white cunt for slimmer yellow pussy.

Gkanai... Where did you get your opinion on US citizens not being able to get 3 year visas? I have one... ( Or were you talking about a 3 yr WHV? Impossible for anyone, I think.)

Other folks... I think there`s a lot of Canadians here for a few reasons. Sure, the economy is poor in some areas. The economy is poor in lots of areas in the US, too.

Canadians just like travelling A LOT more than Americans. Their idea of `abroad` doesn`t end in Hawaii, either. I have heard my US relations say, more than once `Why would you ever leave the US? We have everything here`. I don`t think a Canadian brain could construct that thought.

Anyways, tonight I`m making udon, listening to The Band, and watching X-Files. (1st season)

What does that have to do with anything?

All the basic ingredients are from Canada, eh.

 No ignorant white trash up north, huh? What the fuck ever. Canadians are just as stupid as Yanks so don't pretend otherwise.

And as for the visa thing. Canucks can come over and work with no degree, Yanks can't.

PS Fuck Canada

working holiday

Postby dimwit » Mon Jun 21, 2004 11:28 pm

From what I know, the working holiday suckers out here in the hicks get paid about 160,000 yen a month and they almost all leave after a year because surprise surprise, they can't live on the money.

WTF, why would Americans want to be part of THAT program!

It seems to me that the hamsters, be they Canadians Austrailian or Kiwis get as much as they deserve.

As for the 'opportunities' that await Japanese WHV's cases that arrive on Canadian beknighted shores look under the 'Calgary illegal alien child killer thread'

Say "No More" to Commonwealth hamsters working for peanuts!

Image

I don't think many of those little furry Commonwealth creatures envisaged a road to riches when they signed up. They were probably just after the mandatory one year or more abroad that seems very common in the mindset of citizens from those countries. It would be interesting, however, to know the causes of the recent downturn ...
economies?
terrorism?
hamster health issues?
All of the above?

You should see it if you are out to see dumb comedy. Only a true southerner could appreciate the simplicities of that film.

El Premo Bellino!

Postby Instant Ramen » Tue Jun 22, 2004 9:37 pm

Yo yo yo... I am Australian and I couldn't give a flying fuck about whether people, Japanese in particular, like Australians or not.

After 10 yrs+ in Japan, I generally find that Australians are well enough behaved and well enough liked.

Anyway, to the chase - what the fuck's up with this Premium FG Membership thing? Show me! Show me! How do you get it and why do you get and what do you do with it, and where are the WMDs?
