Fraud victims fear loophole in Yahoo auction controls
Daily Yomiuri, Japan - June 21
In an effort to battle Internet fraud, Yahoo Japan Corp., the nation's largest online auctioneer, will start from next month confirming the whereabouts of individuals selling items through its service, but concerns have been raised about the measure's adequacy....
However, because mail can be received at locations other than a seller's home, such as secretarial services and short-term lease apartments, it is possible for sellers to hide their true address and abuse the system.
In January, a seller conned more than 100 people out of 13 million yen in sales of fictitious laptop computers supposedly made by a discount business operator. The seller gave its address as an Ikebukuro, Tokyo-based secretarial service.
...backed out at the last minute ... when the seller aroused her suspicions.
She asked the seller, "Could you send me a digital photo of the product?"
But the response was, "I've already packed it up."
When she said a picture of the box would be acceptable, the seller said, "I've already taken it to the delivery company."
The woman continued to press the seller, saying she wanted to pick the chair up herself because shipping would be too expensive. She also told the seller she wanted his home phone number instead of his cell phone number. Eventually, the seller got cold feet over the deal, she said.
