Laundry question

Postby fast_dave » Wed Jun 23, 2004 1:32 pm

FG's,

I've seen the pictures of the micro-appliances that FG's have to deal with while living in Japan, like the "hotplate" style stove tops and domitory size refrigerator, but I haven't seen any pictures of typical Japanese washing machines or dryers.

What is the common FG washer and dryer setup that one encounters when working for one of the Big Three Eikaiwas and living in one of their apartments?

Are coin operated wash halls easily found in Japan - or even available? If so, at what cost?

Or, better yet, how do you deal with the clothes washing issue?

I can't say Big Three Eikaiwas provide in terms of machine machines but be prepared for the worst. Japan has DOGSHIT-QUALITY "white goods"--large appliances* and Japanese washing machines are no exception.

I would say that Japanese swirl-swirl-do-nothing-without-any-agitator washing machines are worse than Egypt. However, that would besmirch the fine people of the Cradle of Civilization.

Besides washing machines without agitators, and the fact that Japanese washing machines cannot wash 3 pairs a jeans at one time, the concept of dryers hasn't really dawned on the Japanese either. Arrrrrg.

You'll have to backpack your clothes to the toy-size washing machines at the "Coin Laundry" which would set me back 600-1000 yen every week or two untill I bought the best-of-the-worse washer/dryer money could buy (which cost $1,200 for total crap).

*excluding Japanese microwaves and fantastic Japanese refrigeration compressor technology

I have a fantastic washing machine - and it has a drying function built in.

You just gotta stop getting your washing machines out of the rubbish TT :P

Washing machine with the drying function has a 100% service repair rate after 2yearsd here at Maybe-the-Largest Inc. I heard Sanyo's models don't even function out of the box.

GC, what's the make and model of your machine? I know some people who are going to be needing one in a couple months. :)

My washing machine works pretty well - it was given to me when I first arrived by a friendly girl...

We always had hitachi in Australia - they do work great. But I am not sure about the ones with the dryer built in.

I forget what make it is - but it matches the fridge - I think it was designed by Electrolux and made by *insert name of Japanese company here*

Don't use the drying function all that much - but it is handy for rainy season.

Exactly. I have had three - all hopeless pieces o' shit, and it is for the lack of agitator. To solve this, I do it myself. First I dump in the soap, then turn the sucker on, wait until it is full of water, pop the top and mix the clothes, water, and soap up-and-down with my hand for about a minute. It is THE ONLY way to keep from getting large chunks of soap stuck within the finished load.

Rainy season or not, I want a dryer. I'm sick to death of air-drying stuff. Towels and sheets are not meant to be air-dried - and I don't care what your grandparents (or Taro) say about that. :P

If you're as fast as your name implies you'll have some honey taking care of your clothes in no time. If you're not happy with the service, just spank her little Jap bottom a bit harder than usual. Until then remember this: Dryers are for energy wasting punks. Just hang that shit up and it'll be dry later. No worries

Why? Having your clothes still wet is the perfect excuse for wearing the same clothes as three days ago! I remember Korean chicks would wear the exact same outfit all week and it wasn't no uniform. But still the nastiest shit I ever smelled was Oyaji Rot from Japan. Kimchi breath would be a nice cover up fpr that shit. Try being stuck in a school gym with all them singing the Maru no Hi (Hi no Maru?) I love the emperor even though we lost the big one to a bunch of sexy Yanks song. Smells baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaad :puke:

So....decent odds on starting a new trend in Laundromat Service by opening my own with Full Sized, Extra Large Capacity, American Dryers?

Laundry services will offered on a by-the-pound (hey I'm American) rate as well.

Would I be cornering the market or making life hard on some poor garbage-scavengers 3 months later?

No way, the JPN are way too cheap to even pay one yen for what the sun will do for free.

I am not sure where you are from, but to wash 1 load of clothes at the Laundromat is about $5.00. (600 yen) To dry is only $1.75 So I generally wash them myself (at the crappy school waser) and then dry them at a Laundromat. I'm still not sure, but I think the laundry machine adds soap on it on. If I have to wash something big like futon sheets I go to the laundry mat.

Still in the US. Oklahoma. $1.75 to wash (you provide your own soaps/bleaches etc) and 75 cents for 15 minutes in a high heat dryer + 25 cents for an extra 5 minutes as many times as you need as long as you pay more before the timer runs out (never had to pay more than 1.25 for drying, but it was jeans AND sweats together).

And some places here are free dryers use as long as you wash there!

Do you pay your own utilities? Or is it included in your apartment rent???

Makes a huge difference to the monthly bill.

Japanese Washing Machines are SATANIC!

Postby mr. sparkle » Wed Jun 23, 2004 4:54 pm

AK,
I don't mind air dryin' - that's all good, but Japanese washers S U C K ! Gimme a Kenmore or a Maytag any ol' day. The J-washers mangle sox, wrinkle jeans, leave chunks 'o unused soap and are just plain useless. Near the Pongi hutch lies not one, but TWO places with American style badass washers, which may be like Y300 compared with Y150 J washers. This is about 80% more than Chinatown SF prices - but this place was built on laundry DAMMIT.

Image

Even though Mr. Pongi had his own washer, it mangled my clothing on the first pass. I ended up washing at the laundromat in the big ol' 'Merican style washers and drying air dry stylee on the Pongi Terrace. My clothes survived pretty good that way. I don't like to IRON my T-Shirts. After a J-machine mangle, you're sure to be in for a few rounds of that.

Image

Etergent zero washing machine

As one of the backgrounds of development of this washing machine, it is mentioned that our wash custom is changing saying "it washing if it wears" from "it will wash if it becomes dirty." The towel only once wiped to bath going up, the T-shirt which became sweat had the question of using detergent like clothing, such as oil dirt, in great dirt not being attached.

Washing machine generates an ultrasonic wave and strips off dirt from clothing by this power. Furthermore, the stripped-off dirt is disassembled by the oxygen radical that generated electrolysis system of the washing machine.

8O

I always have cool experiences with the locals at the laundromat. Good place to chat up the local girls. They think it's kawai that gaijin boys have to do the laundry. I saw the shiatsu nurse there that Rob got a "Relax Massage" from. She was hot and Rob was sawin' Z's while I got the painful Doc's pointy fingers in my ribcage.

Welcome to Shiatsu. OUCH.

Anyway, seems most FGs have their own useless washers and are resigned to use them. I know that Guy Jean for one hates what these devil machines do to his crew socks.
