Mainichi News / June 25/MITO --A man who drove without a license for 50 years was arrested Thursday after fleeing the scene of an accident he caused, police said....The 67-year-old man, Gizo Sotome, was arrested for causing a hit-and-run accident and driving without a license...
Satome's two sons, aged 42 and 34, also reportedly drove without licenses for up to 20 years. The sons, who have also reportedly admitted never having obtained a license, were also arrested.

Dang, I've driven 2.5 years without a SHAKEN and I was stopped twice but let go without the Kanagawa cops noticing. But 50 years? How? Japan has road blocks and random-stop inspections CONSTANTLY.

I know many FG's who drive without a licence valid in Japan all the time. When they get caught, they start speaking in English and are able to get away with a warning...

In my case, I was speaking Japanese but the cops were so interested in my ALIENESS that both times they forgot to check the date on my SHAKEN when I handed it to them.

I've been picked up and a checkpoints with several glasses wine under my belt and got off from taking the breatholizer by saying in Japanese, "My garlic and butter stink is too much isn't it?"

However, if it makes ya feel any better, I was nailed twice in a 30-day period last Jan. and couldn't weasle out of the tickets in any language. :x

IIRC, one of those was right after making an FG dropoff at Haneda - with Mrs. Taro in the car. No way you're getting out of a ticket when they know she can interpret for you. :)

Taro, I am more interested in knowing why you got pulled over in the first place? Were you weaving all over the place or did you run a light or what?
