Japan waits on results of second case of mad cow disease in America
Mdn.mainichi.co.jp - Jun 27 2004 0:28:0 GMT
...If the cow is confirmed positive, it is set to influence governmental talks between Japan and the U.S. that kick off Monday in the state of Colorado.
Japan and the U.S. are scheduled to discuss Tokyo's lifting of a ban on beef from America, which was imposed after the first case of mad cow disease, or bovine sponjiform encepalopathy (BSE), was found in a Canadian-born cow in America in December.
..."I wouldn't be surprised if this second case is confirmed," said Kazuya Yamanouchi, professor emeritus at the University of Tokyo who will take part in the U.S.-Japan beef talks. "Results take only a day and a half to come in if they are conducted in Japan. As far as the testing system (of BSE) is concerned, the U.S. still has some work to do."

Japan Reacts To US BSE Test
High Plains Journal, KS - Tuesday, June 29, 2004
The Japanese seem to be sympathetic to the plight of U.S. beef producers after an American cow's BSE test came back inconclusive instead of negative. Japanese veterinarians have conducted millions of the BSE tests, and most that were inconclusive turned out to be negative.
... "There is nothing to do but wait," said one government vet who has seen millions of tests in Japan's "test-all" policy. So far all those tests turned up just 118 potentially positive BSE cases in Japan and only nine positive - or 11, depending on which test the cows passed - mad cows cases.
That is one reason why Japan has taken, for the moment, a sympathetic view of the announcement last Friday by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) that America had found a cow on which BSE tests were inconclusive.

12th case of mad cow confirmed
Japan has confirmed its 12th case of mad cow disease, an official said Monday.
It is the third case of the brain-wasting illness this year.
The 5-year-old dairy cow tested positive for the disease, formally known as bovine spongiform encephalopathy, on Friday at a slaughterhouse in Shisui, Kumamoto Prefecture, prefectural spokesman Toshinori Takano said.

DAMN.
Back home in Colorado, my elk hunting season is almost non-existent because of the milder form of chronic-wasting disease.

And now..... the bonehead Japanese farmers are cheating and using illegal bonemeal feed EVEN THOUGH it has been banned for more than 5 years-----this cow is only 5 years old so the farmer should be thrown in jail for attempted murder.

This crap is scary. I still eat beef here in Cali, but I dont blame Japan for banning US beef. We did have a scare a few months ago, AGAIN. But they poo pooed it off as not being in our food supply. Hell, this thing can incubate for years.....you may see many of us loosing our minds years from now. Oh well, such as life..

Japan faces beef-ban pressure

WASHINGTON (Kyodo) U.S. Agriculture Secretary nominee Mike Johanns pledged Thursday to press Japan to resume imports of U.S. beef.
"If there is one paramount reason why I'm so very anxious to get confirmed, it's to go to work on that issue as a top priority," Johanns, the governor of Nebraska, told a Senate confirmation hearing, underscoring his intention to be a tough negotiator when it comes to opening foreign markets for U.S. farm products.

During the hearing, many senators sharply criticized Japan for allegedly trying to slow down talks and prolong its ban and stressed the need to press Tokyo even at the presidential level.

The Senate Agriculture Committee approved the nomination of Johanns, virtually making it certain the full Senate will confirm him.

Japan, which had been the largest buyer of U.S. beef, and many other nations imposed the ban after a Canadian-born cow in Washington state was confirmed in December 2003 as having mad cow disease. It was the first case of the brain-wasting illness in the country.

How difficult is it to see that you should not feed cattle the ground up remains of other cattle?
