Have you also noticed that all of these movies are set in Japan? Did Hollywood forget all other Asian cultures, like Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese, Filipino...

Duh. There's no marketing cache tied to those countries. The only example of any Korean breakthrough in American media was Margaret Cho's short-lived sitcom, "All-American Girl."

There's no mainstream interest in them, because nobody knows a lot about them, because there's no mainstream interest in them, because nobody knows a lot about them, because....

Hollywood's not in the cultural education business, it's in the money business. Don't expect that to change anytme soon.

You pretty much can't get into China. As far as xenophobia both Korea and China are way worse then Japan. If I hear "we must do things the Chinese way" one more time I'll puke.

Japan, evolved in totally different ways from Western culture, but on a parallel plain. Plus with WW2 and the Japanese influence on America in the 80's Japan is just more relevant. We went through our Chinese fascination in the 70, 80' who knows Korea might be next.

As a Japanese American living in the US, and having lived in Japan too....I've had a lot of ups and downs in the way I was percieved. And being angry by the way "we're" portrayed in movies was the least of my worries.

Kill Bill and Lost in Translation to me were positive movies that made me feel somewhat proud to be Asian American...or even Japanese.

I play both sides though, when I'm in group of my Japanese friends, I'm proud to be American, but when I'm in a group of my American friends, I'm proud to be Japanese. I just got a big ass head thats all.

I can live with and laugh at the stereotypes on TV and film for both Asians in the US and Gaijin in Japan. There was a point in my life it used to piss me off, now....I just don't care anymo! 8O

As for the rest of the Asians that get airtime, Koreans will have to be satisfied with the airtime they get on MASH, and Vietnamese will have to be satisfied with 'Nam flicks for quite some time I predict....

For those who don't know, that's silkworm soup, a bit of "traditional fare" that's sold by street vendors, usually in the winter.

It's one of the nastiest smelling things I've ever encountered. Hell, it makes kimchee smell good. :puke:

I think she kind of missed the boat on both Kill Bill and LIT.

Sofia Coppola and Quentin Tarantino have hooked up. "We're pretty sure we can produce an uglier kid than Bill and Hillary", announced the butt-ugly couple.

Coppola and Tarantino Said to Be a Couple
Wed Jul 14, 2:35 PM ET
NEW YORK -
At the Cannes Film Festival (news - web sites) in May, director Quentin Tarantino announced, "Cinema, mon amour!" It appears he may have another love in his life.
Tarantino and filmmaker Sofia Coppola (news) are "seeing each other," Bumble Ward, publicist for both, confirmed Tuesday.
They "enjoy each other's company," Ward told The Associated Press.

Ummm, I got in

But seriously, I think one of the problems may be China's 'beautiful scenery'...

Sorry 'bout that. Things came up fine on both my PCs, so I figured everything was OK....

And, yes, the site sucks, but it is free and saves me from having to send 3-4 compressed pictures at a time to my mom.

Yeah, not exactly Shangri La, but at 1/10th the cost of my Tokyo apartment, it does suit my student pocketbook. And it is such a wonderful example of China's 'modern' architecture, another sure draw for film-makers...

Hey I'm having the same problem since Tripod banned direct image links in May and Google is phasing in a ban of direct image links for the past month. Meh, now I'm stuck with my stuuuuupid keitai moblog site for micro-JPEGs.

Tripods banned hotlinking for years, and google can't detect it quickly. If you can get the thumbnail up in google, you can post it quickly, and by the time google find out, the links stagnant anyway.

No problemo.

This is "Hawt"? Maybe I don't know what the word means...

Looks like dog doo-doo to me.

Anyway, back on topic. Koreans aren't going to get any more exposure because culturally they don't want it. Koreans, like Japanese, believe their way is the best and only way, but the Koreans really follow through with it. I have a friend who studied Korean for about ten years, but she can never use it, as when she speaks Korean to a Korean they pretend to not understand her. I don't know why, but Koreans will only speak Korean to Koreans. Imagine if Japanese were like this.....

The real question is: why did your friend waste ten years of her life studying it? :?:

That's a good f'ing question, cstaylor. I have no idea. She still keeps it up, but it would probably be more useful to study Latin.
