From Thursday, all magazines and books designated by the Tokyo metropolitan government as containing adult material were required to be displayed separately in stores. The publications also were wrapped in plastic to prevent young people from browsing through them.
The regulation is part of the government's revised ordinance regarding the instillation of morals in children that began to be enforced this month. Publishing companies have also been voluntarily sealing publications featuring nude pictures.
Starting this month, the government will warn stores that do not follow the regulations and impose a fine of up to 300,000 yen if a store continues to defy the ordinance.
