How far is it from Kofu to Handa?

Postby Captain Japan » Sun Jul 04, 2004 9:08 pm

This happened Saturday morning...

Man steals 10 million yen from pachinko parlor

Gomiuri wrote:KOFU-A man stole 10.75 million yen from a pachinko parlor in Kofu on Saturday, police said.

According to Kofu Police Station, the man entered a booth for cash exchanges of pachinko prizes on the northern side of Koshien Pachikonserie III pachinko parlor at about 10:15 a.m., threatened a 68-year-old woman working in the booth with a fruit knife, bound her hands with adhesive tape, stole the cash and ran off.

The woman was unharmed, the police said. The suspected robber was in his 20s, about 1.7 meters tall and dressed in black, the police added.

And this happened early Sunday morning...

Man carrying 1.1 mil. yen in pocket mugged in Aichi

mainichi wrote:HANDA, Aichi --A man relieving himself on a street here was robbed of 1.1 million yen after another man approached him from behind shortly after midnight Sunday and blindfolded him, police said.

Police said the 66-year-old man was relieving himself at the side of a road in Handa, Aichi Prefecture, at about 12:20 a.m. Sunday when a man approached him from behind, blindfolded him with a white towel, and stole a wallet from his pocket containing about 1.1 million yen.

The robber was described as being about 25 years old, and 170 centimeters tall. He was wearing a light-colored shirt and white slippers, police said.

Another question: assuming all ichi-man notes, how thick would 1.1 million (110 notes) make your wallet?

Money is the same thickness as good quality bond paper.
One ream (500 sheets) of good quality bond paper is 2 inches thick.
So, 100-110 sheets paper or 10,000yen notes is 0.4 to 0.5 inches thick.

As Japanese would say, if this was a summer bonus it would be, "hardly good enough to stand up" (good bonus should be stack that's able to stand up on its edge). And yes, a stack 0.4 to 0.5 inches thick would be tight fit in a wallet.

He said that he had to pay a loan that day - but didnt they come up with bankers drafts for such occassions?

Its strange that ichi-man is the largest note denomination.
Granted its $100 in the US now but they used to have denominations of $500, $1,000, $5,000 and $10,000 until 69.
In Europe since the Euro came, theres been a E500 note - although you rarely see it - its mostly E100s and E200s.

110 notes isn't actually that thick but I wouldn't want them in my wallet. What am I saying? Of course I'd want them in my wallet.
I thought most nihonjin used those paper envelopes you find by the side of the ATM machines for big sums. God forbid a note gets a crease in it.

But isn't it great that you can hand over ichi-man almost anywhere, including in a taxi and no one will complain.

Try doing that with a 50 (or even a 20) pound note in England or a $100 in Australia.
Never underestimate the power of very stupid people in large groups.
