Art-House Theater Locations

Postby GuyJean » Fri Jul 09, 2004 7:53 am

Hi,

Looking for artsy, small, dingy theaters for screenings, and to be screened. Do they exist in the Tokyo area?

I can only think of the places where Filmmarmalade's held their events:

Bar Tokyo (Roppongi): http://www.bartokyo.com/
Bar Isn't It (Shibuya): http://www.isnt-it.info/cont/20030531_shibuya/ (now gone)
Pink Cow (Shibuya): http://www.thepinkcow.com

Others?.. Thanks in advance.

PARCO Shibuya runs a few Art-House Theaters. I've been to screenings at Futatmagawa Takeshima-ya Dept Store....

You may know some of the independent film-friendly theaters like Ebisu Garden Cinema, Shibuya's Cinema Rise, or Ginza's Cine Switch. The following theaters may also screen independent films, but they tend to specialize in unusual, obscure, classic or arty titles.

Shibuya has the highest concentration of such cinemas. Two of the best are Uplink Factory and Image Forum. In addition to importing films, Uplink underwrites and produces videos (some of which end up for rental in Tsutaya) and holds music and other events. Image Forum screens everything from Donald Ritchie's 1960s experimental films to Gone with the Wind.

The National Museum of Modern Art, Film Center in Kyobashi focuses on historical films, both domestic and international.

In the Nakano area, both Box Higashi-Nakano and Nakano Musashino Hall feature animation, independent films, and the occasional oddity like a Stan Brakhage retrospective.

Suidobashi's Athen&#233]

IF you can provide your own screen, every ward in Kanto has CHEAP (nearly free) small theaters normally used for ongaku stuff. The ward theaters with screens may be too large for Filmmarmalade-like events.

Some of these ward theaters are REAL small, trippy-hippy places, like the "Fukagawa Edo Museum"Theater. Call my Mrs Taro, the koto sensei, and brainstorm with her.

I think Guy Jean just got a pretty damn good reply from Taro and Jumpsuit. Now if you can both just tell us where the yen/dollar rate is going in the next tweve months, we are in business.

Whoa! You guys rock! Thanks. Dinge isn't a requirement, but in my experiences, a little dinge tends to mean character.

I'm definitely going to check out some of these.. Thanks, man!

That would be my betting direction on the yen dollar too if I ever got rid of this yellow streak on my back. Never have a clue about gold - everyone I meet loves it which always rings a few alarm bells. Am I really lucky enough to know all the smart people?
But refer back to my "never have a clue about gold" for my real input.

So then you are implying a surge in the Nikkei, right? You really think this recovery will have wheels 6 months from now?

Taro's numbers could imply a Nikkei anywhere.

Stronger yen = weak exporters = lower Nikkei
Strong gold = strong china = strong exporters = strong Nikkei

Since the end of 2002 (the point where the Nikkei started its most recent positive move), the yen has gained nearly 15% on the dollar. In that time the Nikkei has gone up nearly 50%. From what I've read, very little of this increase has been due to Japanese investing in their market (they've been cashing out); instead it has been foreigners. So if foreigners continue buying into the recovery they'd continue buying yen to put it in the stock market.

I'm not saying a strong yen means a strong Nikkei as a rule. I'm just repeating what I've read for this recent case. :P The Financial Times had a bit on foreigner involvement in the Japanese stock market recently. Let see if I can track that down.

Strong gold = strong china = strong exporters = strong Nikkei

Also, if Kerry/Edwards win, mo' Nikkei and China support.

Edwards' 2003 senatorial disclosure forms... holding worth between $1 and $5 million ... EuroPacific Growth Fund. --- Kerry's holdings in asia are heavy too....
