Can you really find out personal info online?

Postby AlbertSiegel » Sat Jul 10, 2004 3:48 pm

I was wondering if it is all some sort of scam to sell a collection of links, or can someone really find unlisted phone numbers, addresses, social security and property info online?

I was looking into this after a news story on the subject and I could not find any info on me. Anyone ever done this?

My motto has always been Security through Obscurity. At any rate even before the internet they could find out about you. I mean the Chinese hunted Quai Chang Caine (Kung-Fu) all over America. :-)

It all depends on how much of a trace you decide to leave on the internet.

You're not looking in the right places. You have to search each piece of identifying material separately until you run out of hits.

For example, in your FG profile, you have a homepage. Through a whois search on your domain name, I now have an address, telephone number, and e-mail addresses. Doing searches on each of these identifying material reveals more information.

Once I get your addresses, I can map it using any internet mapping site.

I can also find out what property you own based on the prior identifying material. Once I find out that you own property, I also find out your spouse's name. I can also get your property's assessed value, how much taxes you paid, how much you bought the property for, and when you bought it to roughly gauge your household income.

So after everything's done, I now have your business/home addresses and telephone numbers. I also know what type of business you are in, and some of your hobbies. I also know your spouse's name. I also know what property you own, how much you paid for it, when you bought it and how much your property taxes are. 8O

One caveat about public information is that the majority of it is generated from the U.S. Thus, if you're in the land of concrete, less information is publicly available, so FG should feel safer about their privacy.
