Trailer for Takashi Miike's new film "Izo"

Trailer Here
Coming to screens in about four months or so.

This guy pumps out films at a rate of knots - with varied results. Since 1991, IMDB.com lists 60 titles (about half are TV or direct-to-video titles).

This new one apparently features guest appearances from Beat Takeshi and Bob Sapp. The trailer leaves me with few story clues. Swords, guns, death, I think.

Breaking news...here's a synopsis lifted from aicn.com which may or may not be accurate:
We begin in 1865, when the Shogunate is on its last legs, but still capable of punishing its enemies. One is Izo (Kazuya Nakayama), an assassin in the service of Hanpeida (Ryosuke Miki), a Tosa lord and Imperial supporter. After killing dozens of the Shogun's men, Izo is captured and crucified. Instead of being extinguished, his rage propels him through the space-time continum to present-day Tokyo, where his finds himself one with the city's homeless. Here Izo transforms himself into a new, improved killing machine, his entire soul still enraged by his treatment in his past life. His response to the powers-that-be, whose predecessors put him to death, is the sword. His ability to leap through time, slashing as he goes, attracts the attention of the lords of the universe, who are like a pre-war House of Peers, in office for eternity. Izo, however, is not about to bow to anyone, even the lords of creation (he even rapes Mother Earth). In the final conflict, the prime minister (Beat Takeshi), calls in allies from all eras, from samurai swordsmen to the yakuza. It should be the most bloody and violent sword fight sequence ever staged.

Based on a true story, I believe.

Well, Zatoichi, was pretty lame, what with the tapdancing and RENT ripoff moves. Maybe this will be better.

I think you're confusing Miike Takashiwith Kitano Takeshi. also known as "Beat" Takeshi. Kitano is apparently in the casting of Izo, but Miike is directing.
Kitano was a popular comedian who became an unsuccesful director until he won a prize at the Venice festival.
Miike is a born and raised psycho that makes between 3 and 5 movies per year. He 's known for his extreme interest in sm culture and stupid jokes involving sperm and bowels. In the 5 movies he does in one year usually 3 are very gory and crappy and one is for the art house theaters so that foreign film critics can still praise him.
To have a good idea of how weird and repulsive his flicks can be my personnal recomendation would be Ichi The Killer in its uncut and uncensored version.
For his more "serious" stuff try his remake of the classic yakuza flick Graveyard of honor.

AICN.com Trailer link on page HERE
The South Korean filmmaking genius, Chan Wook Park, whose OLDBOY recently won the Grand Prix at this year's Cannes Film Festival is next contributing his astonishing talents to an anthology film that includes his work from Korea, Takashi Miike's brand of genius from Japan... and from Hong Kong, Fruit Chan

Probably because of the PC I'm using, I can't access this link so I haven't posted it directly. But the responses on the forum suggest it should work OK.

It's interesting that Miike is directing Takeshi Kitano took the Zatoichi project out from under him. Miike was supposed to direct Zatoichi, but in classic Miike style, had a huge bloddy death scene planned for Kitano (who played the title role). Savvy Kitano smelled a possible series (as the original Zatoichi series went on for 15 films or so) and disagreed with the title character's death. Sempai Takeshi won the battle, and Miike was sent packing.

I liked Zatoichi, but would have liked to see Miike's vision of it. Kitano directed, but it is a very different style from his other movies, and I found the CG blood distracting, although Kitano says that was on purpose, to give it a "anime" style.

I am looking forward to IZO, and I think it comes out in August...

That's such a bullshit excuse. If you want "anime style" then fucking draw it!

Any other vision of that movie would've been better than "Samurai: The Musical." The few good scenes it had weren't enough to save this piece of cinematic ass.

Looks like this film is out already - earlier than I thought.

IZO - Violence and swordplay in wild, wild Edo(Japan Times review)

Strangely enough, when I read Mark Schilling's review (published yesterday) I had a sense of deja vu. Then I realized that he was the source of the post by someone called IFartOnYourGrave on aintitcoolnews.com - the synopsis is identical to the review

I don't think this comes out for another week or so, but don't expect to find it in any of the big theaters...this one will be in back alley theaters only, probably. I asked a theater manager about it in Osaka, and he couldn't find a record of it coming out anywhere, and had never heard of it. When I told him the cast (who I could remember) he seemed suprised that he never heard it.

Although later I was told my pronunciation was bad. I said Izo instead of iZO. I told that person to fuck off.

Saw IZO today. Most of the dialogue went way over my head, but it didn't matter too much, I think. After Miike's disappointingly standard RING rip-off, Chakushin Ari (which is now spawning a sequel!), here he goes completely over the top with an overly long 'conceptual meditation' on humanity's violent urges. Preachy and repetitive (we get some of the same stock war/atrocity footage seen in Casshern, another beautiful mess) even hardcore Miike fans should wait till 7-day DVD rental for this sadsack...Erk, eck, damn, there I go again, channeling Gene Siskel. But when the spirit moves me, I am powerless to resist...
There is nothing more noble than impassioned nonsense.

His latest one is Ryu Gagotoku, I'm not really a fan of him,
I think his movies are a bit silly and perverted
