Weird experience reading this story from the UK's Independent newspaper. It feels like another newbie reporter on Japan and then you realize that Japan doesn't get mentioned once in the entire piece.

The rapid growth of camera phones has had a sinister side effect - men taking sneaky snaps up the skirts of unsuspecting women. And, Hugh Wilson discovers, they are then pored over by a global audience of voyeurs


It's impossible to put an exact figure on it, but it wouldn't be an exaggeration to suggest that tens of thousands of women are unknowingly appearing on pornographic websites.
... But the real kudos is still reserved for those men who risk public humiliation and (occasionally) criminal prosecution to get the real money shots - pictures that literally go "up skirt" or "down blouse", or are surreptitiously taken under the doors of lavatory cubicles, or in a public shower.
...That fear has prompted drastic measures around the world. Saudi Arabia and Jeddah, for instance, have banned camera phones altogether. In Korea, manufacturers are being forced to design camera phones that beep when pictures are taken. In parts of Britain, Australia, Norway, America, Germany and Switzerland, the phones have been banned fromswimming-pools, schools, gyms, parks and beaches.
...Diana Russell, author of Against Pornography: The Evidence of Harm, agrees that technology is fuelling the creation of voyeuristic material, and points out that clandestine pictures of women will be circulating on the internet for years to come, with the potential to ruin relationships and careers.

The weirdness asspect about the story is the author doesn't seem to understand the "upskirt is an engrish word and that upskirt magazines that have been around in Japan for at least 25 years pre-date keitai-cam ( which of course pre-dates camera phones). Sheesh.

I was talking to a shop owner in Akihabarawho specializes in micro lens cameras and he was saying how there is some kind of regulation now that requires mobile phone cameras to make a sound of some kind when the shutter opens and closes. I don't know the details or if it is a Japan-only deal.

Glad you mentioned that because I was wondering about this:
In Korea, manufacturers are being forced to design camera phones that beep when pictures are taken.

I think there are a few Korea hands lurking who might know whether that is true...

Yep. That's required in Japan and of COURSE Korea just had to copy Japan. I should guess the rest of asia is following suit. Hey China hands???

It's a recent development. There are plenty of older phones still in circulation that don't make a sound when pics are taken.

That done make sound??

Some of the new ones make sound, but the perpatrators have started taping up the speaker so the sound is muffled.
I will not abide ignorant intolerance just for the sake of getting along.

My Samsung makes a sound that you can't turn off, and I think all the new phones do. So I guess that answers questions about Korea.

But there are so many ways to get into the phone via a cord and a computer program to get rid of it, that I doubt it will stop anyone from being a peeper. Someone dedicated to being a perv will no doubt find ways to conceal it.

Frequenting the local Cybermart and 电脑场 (a 'PC mart' with small booths under one roof) as I do, I've seen a few of the micro lens cameras and they had no clicking sound unless you set it. But then again, those kind of items are a bit pricey for the average Chinese user. Plus, adult material is officially illegal in China, so I don't imagine there will be a crackdown or mandated clicking sounds unless a major problem arises.
