Bad kanji tattoos

Postby Taro Toporific » Thu May 15, 2003 12:19 pm

Strange tattoos have Britney Spears and starlet Taryn Manning ...
Montreal Gazette, Canada - 14 May
Starlet Taryn Manning told a reporter that she and Britney Spears have identical tattoos.. Manning says the pair got the mark thinking it was the word "mysterious" in Japanese.
But then, "I was getting changed recently in Japan," Manning says, "and women laughed when they saw my tattoo. (One of them) told me it means "strange," which is not cool. Britney "was absolutely devastated when I told her."

Sympathy

Postby Marvin Feltcher » Thu May 15, 2003 1:42 pm

I can sympathize with them.
When I was young (and thin), I had a tattoo of the outline of Australia put on my arse cheek. Now I am considerably larger, the map looks like friggin' Gondwanaland.

Have you got photos?

Are you kidding? I'd be lucky to fit my cheeks in a single lens -- even in panorama mode.

Wise girl. Don't do it!

Another buddy went out on a drinking binge in Thailand that he decided to cap off with a visit to a tattoo artist.
Without remember what had happened the previous night, he woke the following morning to discover he had a superb picture of Daffy Duck covering his bicep.
Well you've all seen one of my piercings - at least you can take them out when you get bored of them or what to change the "look".

But I dunno, I have always wanted a tat - just a little one..

Tattoos are like marriage. They seem like a good idea at the time, but you regret them after a few years.

Great practical joke - serves them right for not checking before they had something so permanent..

I wonder who is responsible?

Yeah, what's up with foreigners and their silly Kanji tattoos... at least Japanese idiots only wear the jinglish T-shirts (which you can quickly discard after learning the truth). ;)

I tell you what you DON'T want to get as I said long long ago in my one of my first posts on the FG Forum...
Post subject: What's the opposite of Engrish?Posted: Thu Oct 24, 2002 3:36 pm

KANJI TATTOOS overseas, of course, are the inverse of EngRish.

KARURI (light) is the favorite Kanji tattoo I've seen on a blond bimbo's ankle.

She told me it's meant 'lightness/freedom'. I told her it meant 'slut'.

She giggled. I giggled. We wiggled. Nuf' said ]

'Made in Japan' tattoo

Postby Taro Toporific » Sun May 18, 2003 4:35 pm

A quote from Richard Polsky's expose 'I Bought Andy Warhol' ...
... All he wanted to do was surf, play golf, chase Asian women and occasionally deal a great picture. kind enough to warn me about Jim's poor state of mind. Fully briefed, I made my way back to Jim's office. Walking down the hall, I passed an open bathroom and noticed someone was scrubbing the loo - it was Squid (no one knew her real name) - a twenty-something Asian woman who was a mysterious presence in Jim's life. Rumour had it that she was Jim's lover. People who were familiar with Squid spoke of her dark side.
Supposedly, she had a tattoo on the sole of her left foot that said: 'Made in Japan'.Image

How about a Japanese emoticon

Of course it all depends where the tat is put (btw I have a red bandana)

PHOTO essay on bad kanji tats

Postby Taro Toporific » Tue Apr 06, 2004 9:25 pm

WARNING: registration required
Japanese tattoos don't always mean what their wearers think they do
April 6, 2004 / Chicago Tribune
Stop by any tattoo shop, and there's a good chance you'll see someone getting a kanji character inked onto his or her skin....
....The problem is that sometimes the tattoos don't mean what their wearers think they mean. With the assistance of Mariko Sasaki, a researcher at the Consulate General of Japan in Chicago, we examined the tattoos of five Chicagoans.

....# What he thinks his tattoos say: "Love hurts."
# What they actually say: The meanings of the two tattoos roughly translate to "love" and "it hurts." They'd never be used together, however, and they appear to say "love -- OW!" or "I love this tattoo but it was painful to get."

People are stupid.

I don't understand how people would can think you can translate something directly into another language and expect it to make sense, especially slang.

And how come people who display/wear/tattoo/advertise in foreign languages never bother to ask a native speaker if it's right or not? Like people who tattoo Kanji, or Japanese companies advertising in English, etc. It's not that hard considering the number of foreigners (that speak fluent English) there are in Japan...

They're probably afraid that it isn't right. Why risk the embarrassment of asking someone, especially when the intended audience doesn't speak the language anyway? I think the engrish t-shirts you see japanese girls wearing are cute actually.. "it sunshine flower respect me." hehe..

In the Jan. 11, 2005 episode of NBC's new sitcom "Committed", there is a story about Bowie's (Darius McCrary) Chinese character tattoo. Thanks to Jason England, he has furnished the following video clips from the show:

Hanzi Smatter

A site dedicated to the misuse of kanji in western culture.

People spend so much time and effort getting a permanent tattoo. Why oh why can't they get it checked first?? Or better yet - use a tattoo artist that has some skill in the language.

But how much fun do people have in giving out bogus information for people wanting kanji translations for tattoos. I was talking with a blogger last night who gets many requests for translations for words like "Carburettor" into kanji for back tattoos. I suppose stupid people deserve getting a bum steer with stuff like this.

Doesn't Brittany Spears have a stupid kanji tattoo too?
