Hey TIJ and election seasion: no place is safe from the dread loudspeakers.
360-out-of-365 days of the year, they is no a soul at the Int'l Port of Yokohama (cruise ship lines don't come to Japan since vacations on concrete and dioxin aren't in high demand)
Details here:

If I was capturing the real Japan on film, I would shoot at the Condomed Penis Bldg, the Mrs Darth Vader's Twat Bldg next to Russian Embassy and of course the Golden Turd Bldg.

Condomed Penis Bldg??

I guess im usually too drunk to appriciate unique architecture when in Roppongi, and especially distracted by the Coppers with their sticks when stumbling past the Russian embassy in the wee hours...

Kenzo

Postby mr. sparkle » Sun Jul 11, 2004 11:21 am

I'm a big fan of Tange Kenzo. Especially the Fuji TV building in Odaiba. I liked it so much, there is a couple of pictures of it in my book.

Lots of other other Kenzo PIX and links to Japanese Architects here.

thanks for the archy link.

also, if anyone can take a pic or at least get the real name of either of the two below i would appreciate it. don't know which ones you're talking about.
-Condomed Penis Bldg?
OR
-the Mrs Darth Vader's Twat Bldg next to Russian Embassy? What area is that anyway???

i do plan to get a shot of the golden turd bldg. don't know it's proper name either. (?)

also i'm looking for

1) a nice planeterium (for interior shots). or a place that i could fake it in with a projection. should probably have a dome shaped ceiling.

2) i've seen this bldg but forgot where in tokyo and can barely describe it because it is so freakin incredible. useless eh? uhmm it looks like part of a huge black armored slug or worm or something in that animal kingdom genus species. very organic and solid. you can't imagine how it divides the floors from looking at it's exterior. (never been inside). It isn't very tall (equivalent of 10 stories maybe if i remember correctly) surrounded by other bldgs and partly hidden from certain points of view on the ground.
any person with leads or ideas?

1) How about a Zillionare Hippy City Hall, geodesic dome of Shonandai Cultural Center in Fujisawa?
2) Your "Slug Building" is Shibuya's Rise Cinema Complex at the top of Spain Zaka.

Itsuko Hasegawa rejected an historicist, formulaic approach, avoiding banal quotations from the repertory of world architecture: the Mayan temple, the agora, the amphitheater. With a playful sense of decoration, she has assembled shells, marbles, fragments of coloured glass and animal footprints among fairytale silver 'trees,' a river and two cosmic spheres.

Rise Cinema Complex in the Shibuya area of Tokyo, 1986, by Atsushi Kitagawara. An extraordinary mess, in the best sense. "Rise's strongly surrealistic forms - reminiscent of the work of the Austrian architect Hans Hollein - have been designed to match the highly theatrical quality of the urban landscape in this entertainment district of Tokyo. In fact, the building itself adds up to stage set in the urban theater of Shibuya: the undulating roofs with 'collapsing' forms are covered with folded drapery, molded in cast aluminum]

thanks for your suggestions taro.
i'm such a darn tootin nitpicker though. and it will pay off when the film is made i assure you :)

1) trippy exterior. the interior seating is ok, but not tilted much and the ceiling is full of gaffing and lights.
is there an imax 70mm theatre in tokyo?

2) i now that one but the one i'm thinking of is quite different. the above mentioned SLUG BLDG is pretty untidy, a bit trashy. the one i am thinking of is very SOLID, like a body part from super armadillo. if russian communism archy were influenced by gundam. :) very clean machine kinda stuff.

thanks again everyone and and ongoing appreciation for keeping your eyes peeled for any cool locations.

thanks jumpy

So what you offering us budding location scouts? film credits? cold hard cash?

So are you actually coming out to Japan to check out things for yourself? You will score a heap of ideas if you take us all out for beers and pick our brains then.
