soundtrack with japanese tunes

Postby myothercarisajumpsuit » Tue Jul 13, 2004 7:39 am

looking for nice japanese music for the soundtrack of my film.
or anything nice really considered.

think
fable-esque, fun, sad, light, funky, satirical, rainbow of emotions and fruit flavors - - swing meets baroque and does a quirky dance.

or think
erik satie, or soundtracks; amelie or mark mothersbaughs work on rushmore and the royal tenenbaums.

or think
japanese weird, funny, great, rock, jazz or anything...

was thinking also of some hip okinawan music.
who's the okinawan chick that hit it big in mainland doing her okinawan j-pop ?

any other recommendations? anything considered / checked out.

a thousand domos

Hajime Chitose has a folk-style voice and hit it big. As does Hitoto Yo who is half Taiwanese. Shang Shang Typhoon are not from Okinawa but specialize in a kind of Okinawan-style cabaret. Famous acts with the Okinawan sound are Nenes and Rinken Band. Or did you mean Amuro Namie or Cocoo for more mainstream J-pop/J-rock?

Japanese Weird: Yura Yura Teikoku, Acid Mothers Temple, Boat. Missile Girl Scoot, Bonkin Clapper, I guess Love Psychdelico qualify too with their bilingual-meets-Sheryl Crow style

Soundtrack-style: Ego-Wrapping, Fried Pride, Bonobos, Humbert Humbert, Buffalo Daughter, Spangle Call Lilli Line, Kazumi Nikaido

Fable-esque, quirky swing/baroque - SCLL. Also check out a CD called The Yoshiwara released on Victor - usually in Jazz sections - its a joint project between a trance DJ and a traditional singer (not enka).

Link Here

Some band links also there but most of them will turn up easily on google[/url]

My daily sound-track-in-my-head is Tom Waits "Hi Ho Hi Ho It's Off To Work We Go" in the minor key.*

*"Stay Awake" Interpretations Of Music From Vintage Walt Disney Films, CD, A&M 3918, USA, 1988... Tom Waits' version of "Hi-Ho, Hi-Ho" ... sounds like the 7 Dwarfs are off to mine the pits of Hell.

Definitely download and listen to our own gomichild's band Marshmallow Spike

Songs written by her J-husband Yoshi. Songs in Japanese and English.

BTW gigs coming soon to a venue near you.. I am sure that GC will advertise herself but some gigs are coming up in Shinjuku and Yokohama so I expect all the FG's to come along to the closest venue.

Please tell me your movie is not another one of the - "Oh look at the freaky things in Japan seen through the eyes of a wide eyed noob" yawners.

Of course you'll need permission

Postby mr. sparkle » Tue Jul 13, 2004 3:28 pm

These are all great choices, but....

I suggest that you not use your musical choices w/o permission from the artist(s) for the film. That way, you can at least stay legal. Contact the record labels themselves, they may have stuff you can use that they want to promote anyway. You should at least be able to get festival rights for the music. If you hit it big, they'll probably want a cut. If not, no biggie.

You should definitely get started on this ASAP, because it takes a while to weed through all the red tape.

After all, TIJ!

Agreed. Shena Ringo is the best J-pop act around and a lot of her stuff would make good soundtrack. However, as Mr. Sparkle mentioned, she's a big act, and you've got some red tape ahead with Toshiba-EMI if you decide to use her stuff.

Other possibilities:
Natsuki Mari - Her new Eve Montaigne-inspired chansons with Konishi Yasuharu are pretty great.
ROCO / Spangle Call Lilli Line / ASLN, etc. (anything from the Groove Rock Vol. 1 compiliation is good, dreamy yet edgy indies pop).
Takagi Masakatsu (good, often somewhat kraftwerkian electronica).
There is nothing more noble than impassioned nonsense.

I saw the TV show that Adam and Joe put together in Japan around teh time of the World Cup. They can be pretty funny but, unfortunately, it was deeply unimpressive. It eventually only got aired on BBC's low audience digital channel. Love Hotels, Host Clubs, feaky food...it was newbie reporters with a camera. Graham Norton and Jonathan Ross did a bit better but probably because they had better researchers.
