Was out at Nagaoka Tuesday night and Wednesday. Missed the main downpour but the girls at the bar were saying they would need a boat to get home. Cancelled trains and real fast flowing rivers.

Train back to Tokyo was filled with a Tokyo rescue crew. Thought I'd walked into a carriage of crims in orange overalls. Must be watching too many American movies.

TOKYO (Reuters) - Heavy downpours lashed areas of northern Japan Saturday as they struggled to clean up following torrential rains earlier in the week, taking the death toll to 14, with one person missing.
Flood warnings were issued for areas of Niigata prefecture and the Meteorological Agency warned that some parts of Niigata faced the worst danger of landslides in recent years.
Around 12,000 households were told to evacuate.
