Yeah, but 'ol Popeye is going to be withering away at taxpayer expense. What's he gonna do, work at NOVA? Think they'll take him? He's got experience. Ah, but he already fraternized with a student.

Seriously, what's he gonna do?

Die.

Jenkins is said to have a form of cancer, though Japanese officials suggest it is not immediately life-threatening.

He's has said he retired four years ago.
Soga, family have dinner with envoy
Daily Yomiuri, Japan - Jul 11, 2004
... When he was asked whether he was still teaching English, Jenkins replied that he had stopped working four years ago ...

Well, considering all the money the family is getting from the government every month. Jenkins will be able to buy all the Mild Seven cigarettes he likes. He could also probably appear on a mild seven commercial considering how much his pack of fags showed through his shirt after arriving in Jakarta.

I can see it now, "Mild Seven bringing families together", Ha!
That must be worth at least 100,000,000 Yen to them.
The road to the abyss.

a test of the Bush administration's timidity

Bush's magnanimity at stake in Jenkins case
The Asahi Shimbun, July 19 (IHT/Asahi: July 20, 2004)
....Jenkins crossed into North Korea from the vicinity of the demilitarized zone 39 years ago. The U.S. government still regards him as a deserter.
Explaining himself, he has reportedly said he wanted to avoid being assigned to a tour of duty in Vietnam.
Vietnam-era draft dodgers were pardoned while Jimmy Carter was U.S. president. The Jenkins case poses a test of the Bush administration's magnanimity.

I don't trust Bush.

Magnanimity from Bush?

What is he smoking and how fast can I get some?
I will not abide ignorant intolerance just for the sake of getting along.

So who's paying for Jenkins' health costs?

Yomiuri's July 20 issue:
http://www.yomiuri.co.jp/newse/20040720wo61.htm

"In the relaxing environment of the hospital, Soga, 45, and her daughters are expected to discuss the family's future, while monitoring the progress of Jenkins' treatment.
Jenkins has been given a private room, while Soga and the two daughters are staying in a room next to his.
Soga's room has three beds and a television. A connecting door to Jenkins room allows the family to come and go as they please.
As the rooms are not equipped with cooking facilities, the family ate meals prepared by the hospital.
On Monday, an official from the Cabinet Secretariat abductee office has been stationed in the hospital to act as a liaison for the family, but Soga and her family received no visitors and they did not venture outside.

What, you can't help a brother in need? ha!

I plan on being a freeloader myself. If I, or my kids or wife, ever need health care for an extended period of time, and can survive the plane trip to Japan, I expect you guys to meet me at Narita with my the paperwork to update the Juuminhyou and get a new Kokumin Kenko Hoken card and then drive us to the hostpital via the Yokohama Kohoku-ku kuyakusho. Thanks for paying into the system for me all these years Captain and Taro!

Sorry dude--beat ya to it. Steve B. and I are already collecting our free ride (basically I'm living in national health insurance exile).

I didn't notice any of the Japanese press mentioning the sudden addition of the cane. But this NZ paper came out with it.

After appearing relatively fit when he arrived in Jakarta last week, Jenkins disembarked in Tokyo looking frail and bent.

He walked across the airport tarmac leaning on a cane and on the arm of his wife, and later entered the hospital in a wheelchair.
