drivers licence renewal

Postby amdg » Thu Aug 05, 2004 5:08 pm

Has anyone ever tried to renew their home country drivers licence while they are over here in Japan? One of the requirements for me is to have a recent photograph endorsed by a police officer (or other person of standing such as licensing official etc etc), so I took it down to the local koban and they flat out refused to do it. I realise its a pretty uncomon sort of request over here, and its probably not part of their purview. But really, its all about my country's law, not theirs, and all they have to do is state that its a true photo of me,....

Maybe we just all look alike and its too hard to tell us apart... What did you guys do? I'd rather not pay a judicial scriviner to do it, or drive all the way out to a testing center. Any hints for convincing the local boys in blue that they won't be signing away their lives?
Mr Kobayashi: First, I experienced a sort of overpowering feeling whenever I was in the room with foreigners, not to mention a powerful body odor coming from them. I don't know whether it was a sweat from the heat or a cold sweat, but I remember I was sweating whenever they were around.

Just pay the 8,000yen or less and have these folks handle it---that's much better than losing a day's wages sweating the details.

Another way to get a photo endosed is to ask a "certificate of good conduct" or "lack of a criminal record" for a variety of reasons for use abroad including adoption, school attendance, employment, etc. One key requirement is a set of your fingerprints and a PHOTO and you can ask your Embassy or Consulate which serves your part of Japan for the FORM and then this endosing is done at the Japanese police station nearest your residence.

See there's always a different way to skin a cat.

Allow me to highlight this here as passing roadtest for motorcycle licenses is such pain in the a*s. In fact I thought of asking FGs here (who had passed motorcycle licenses in Japan) how many times had you all taken the test . In FAQ of http://www.japandriverslicense.com/lic.htm
Q. Can you help me to pass my motorcycle license driving test?
A. No, sorry. As there is little demand we have not developed our services to meet this need. We suggest that you look at http://japaninfo.esmartweb.com/bikerfaq-menkyo.html for more information regarding motorcycle licenses, The site is a little out date but contains some valuable information.

Quote from http://japaninfo.esmartweb.com/bikerfaq-menkyo.html
DOING IT THE JAPANESE WAY Getting a scooter-only license is apparently trivial. Getting a motorcycle license (mid-class or big-class) is rather difficult, and apparently an exercise in patience and frustration (and money).
