Yo, I have been living here hearly 20 years now and I STILL hate it when people stare, like it's the first time you saw a "gaijin".

I mean we are living in the 21 Century, What do you do? I love to stare back. Take a picture it lasts longer The phrase wears off after time. Just because I stand 6'4" , lily white, It still bugs the hell out of me. What do you do?

take out your digicam and snap em.. (helps if you have a compact then you can power it up in your bag and spring out a shot)

say to them either very politely or very rudely that they look stupid

turn around and fart

say in a loud voice congratulations you are the 20 millionth idiot to stare at a foreigner

take out some book and try to convert them to panawave or aum or whatever...

(for hokkaido residents) say slowly and clearly " i am not russian"

The funny thing, I never got a stare. I remember once this woman, who looked like she was 150cm, walked into me and looked up only to say ... wow, big! (I am 188cm tall)

193 CM give or take a few millimeters. (TOO damn big in this country to find decent clothes, (at least where I live) Also feet that stick out like water skis. (Size 31 here)

Yesterday I was teaching in Honda. Walked into the canteen where a million blokes wearing their white prison uniforms were. When the tall gaijin chick goes in wearing black, silence prevailed for a few moments. You could almost hear water dripping in the back room. Kinda threw me, but grinned like a lunatic and tried to stare right back at them. But still ended up feeling a bit of a twat....

Wear sunglasses. Most people don't stare if you catch them doing it, right? Well, with the dark sunglasses on, they can't tell when you are looking back so it tends to cut down a large percentage of the staring. It also keeps you sane in this land of florescent lights (like on the subway). Worked for me anyway in my six years of fucked gaijin-ness.

My daughter is 17, she and her friend get that kind of crap all the time when they go shopping together. "It's like "get a f.ckin life"
