do Japanese women hate each other?

Postby kotatsuneko » Mon Aug 09, 2004 8:07 pm

Ok, so far I have only spent like 18 months in the country, was just watching some tv show footage and some current affairs programmes

I did a lot of people watching in Sapporo and some in Tokyo, saw waaay too much tv (all kinds of shows, it was a great teacher and friend)

even watching friends or colleagues, I often got the feeling that, barely disguised at times, that Japanese women really don't seem to like each other at all

gross generalisation I know, but this isn't something I picked up whilst working with / watching Japanese men

any thoughts?

Catfights: Women really don't seem to like each other at all... "Japanese" is irrelevant.

To quote AK.

BULLSHIT

Women are sometimes cautious of other women - minorities or those with limited power need to compete for limited resources - but hate.. nah.

There are some girls who don't like other girls of course but I tend not to be friends with girls like that. I don't need the constant game playing and politics in my social life - I get it enough at work so my friendships are with good and honest people who I trust and would walk over hot coals to protect and help. But maybe that is just me.

I really don't get that impression at all. There seems to be a lot of camaraderie between my J girlfriends and the women in my classes.

However, do a bunch of female esl teachers in the same room hate each other? Whoo, don't even get me started. 8O

The real question should be 'do all people hate each other'? The answer is just most people.

Mr Kobayashi: First, I experienced a sort of overpowering feeling whenever I was in the room with foreigners, not to mention a powerful body odor coming from them. I don't know whether it was a sweat from the heat or a cold sweat, but I remember I was sweating whenever they were around.

on the other hand, I think Japanese women love one women.
I have even been told this. Japan in general i believe is feminine.
This femininity is expressed in its lilliputian menial and frivilousity.
Which to me means that women are the social drivers in Japan.

I do think that Japanese women are more socially and technologically advanced than the men but considering that why Japan remains a patriarchal society I cannot yet explain.

Quote from my brother who has lived in Japan since he was 19... "It is a myth that Japan is a truly patriachal society. It is matriachal. Just ask any man who has lived with or married a Japanese woman."

I don't know if this is accurate, I am just quoting the king of nampa.

My opinion.. why don't Japanese women pursue decent careers?? the pay for women sucks in this country. There is not an equal pay scale. It is much better for your financial security to snag a husband with good prospects than to smack yourself in the head with a glass ceiling on a daily basis.

Can I hear "Path of least resistance"? Anyone??

I think things will change, due to the birthrate being so low. Rather then fight the fact that women are discriminated against in the workplace, they simply didn't have kids. Now all the men are up in arms asking "who will replace the (male) workforce if women don't start having more babies?" The answer is simple: women will replace those male workers. It's that simple.

Japanese women are smart. They're going to get everything they want, simply because women entering the workforce will be seen as "their sacrifice for Japan". They won't have to fight, they'll never be called "feminazis", they won't be viewed as an "enemy" by men.

Pretty smart of them, just not having kids like that. Why didn't Western women think of this 30 years ago?

And yes, I know, this post was typed out in a hurry and is leaves a lot to be desired. I'm not trying to write a newspaper editorial over here, just speaking off of the top of my head.
