Does this policy exist in Japan too?

Postby Crispy » Thu Aug 15, 2002 3:11 am

Recently I have been arguing with my friends about the policy more and more retail stores here have been taking up of checking recipts at the door to make sure people aren't walking out with extra stuff in their bag. I don't see what the big deal is but lots of people consider it to be a gross violation of their rights that shouldn't be tolerated in America. Anyway, does this happen in Japan? How much of a problem is shoplifting and employee theft in Japan anyway?

I dont see it as a Violation of my rights but it irritates the piss out of me! :x

I hate when people that I'm doing business with treat me like a criminal!!! Its like when I go buy gas and they make me walk in and pay before I can pump it. Screw that!! Dont treat me like a criminal! Im you damn customer. ...or when I go to my dealer and he instists I pay for my drugs before I...er ... uh nevermind... lets just go back the pumping gas/bag check thing.

It pisses me off because they are treating me (their beloved customer) like a thief for no good reason. I'll drive off before I go to a gas station like that and have raised hell with store managers for the bag check thing.

Hm...that has been the response of so many people I have met on the internet, and no one I know in meatspace. As long as they are polite (and it is a request and not an order) I don't have a problem, and don't want to start a ruckus. lots of people think it is their duty to do just that though.

Yeah I've been complacent of late...its like there is no point in fighting it. But doesnt it offend you to be treated like you're a thief? especially when you are their customer?

I just can't summon up any anger about the whole thing. Maybe it's because, in the unlikely event of me actually being accused of shoplifting, I am confident in my ability to talk my way out of it. Besides, I know those employees are just checking because it's what they need to do to support themselves, not because they actually think I might be a shoplifter.

I dont get made at the employee. That would be pointless. I get mad at the management and the corporate policy makers.

I hadnt even thought of the possibility of being accused of shoplifting... so no im not worried about that. I am more concerned with the fact that *I* am the one they feel they can inconvenience.

What ever happened to customer service or treating customers like they are welcome. I feel like sending the message to mgmt "Dont waste my time and dont act like I've done something wrong when I've just paid for your f*cking salary"

Well, they are only wasting a maximum of twenty seconds of your time, usually more like five in my experience. I spend more time than that just walking across the parking lot. And, you can just refuse if you want, and waste no time at all. That's a molehill if I ever saw one.

I wouldn't call what I am doing "complacent" that implies that I have just accepted it and started doing it without thinking. No, I am observing how the door monitor guy is behaving, and I will refuse and or cause a ruckus if the situation warrants (i.e. I actually get accused of something), but that hasn't happened yet.

My first experience with the door check thing is at Fry's Electronics... they've been doing it for years... it's annoying, but that's why I used to shop at the local Mom 'n Pop shop down the street. 8)

A few days ago at Frys in SoCal, some people tried shoplifting a cart full of computer equipment, but didn't get away with, because a couple miles away (after a car chase) they crashed the popos picked them up.

Definitely not just SoCal. Usage is getting pretty common these days.

It's actually said more like po-po. I first heard it in hip-hop... so if you don't listen to much of that, it's probably not something you'll hear much. Regardless, I still hear a lot of whitebread honkeys saying it (in Oregon, nonetheless).

I'm getting old... I remember when we used to call them "the fuzz" and people would drive around with "fuzzbusters" on their dashboard. 8O
