I fucking hate Nagoya and the happiest day of my life was when I got out of that fucking Hell-hole dump. Shitty nightlife, shitty people, shitty culture, even the FGs are shit. Sorry Steve and Tina (I think Tina lives or lived there).

Hey, I repent that criticism of Nagoya. I mean, resent. I had one of the best times of my life in that city, wonderbar paradise par excellence.

But not everyone was happy there. I WAS!

Nagoya tips

Postby djgizmoe » Thu Aug 19, 2004 10:07 pm

Mago is good some nights. Still pretty hard-house dependant, I bet, which can get annoying, but it's a cool atmosphere.
http://www.club-mago.co.jp/

Texte in Shin-Sakae often has 'real' events; tiny as hell, but I've seen Yamantaka Eye, Fantastic Plastic Machine and some good foreign talent there.

There's a real-live live house too, Imaike's Tokuzo. Seems like at least once a month something weird and worthy plays there (I've seen Acid Mothers Temple, Keiji Haino, Phnompenh Model and some pretty heavy foreign avante-garde acts there).
http://www.tokuzo.com/

Huck Finn is also pretty good for more hardcore/punk stuff, as is the always overpriced Club Quattro in Yaba-cho.

And there's a cool cafe/gallery/record store/live space round the corner from Mago worth checking out called Canolfan 8. Get in with the artsy crowd, and you'll rarely be bored.
http://www.canolfan.com/

And of course there's always Misfits in Imaike, the most FG of FG bars in the Nag.
http://www.misfits.ws/

There are a lot of new places to check out since I left awhile back. Just check Japanzine and Pia and you should be able to fill your free time pretty nicely.

I'm working with a guy in Nagoya and after he tried to screw me over in my first month on the job all those years ago, Aichi-jin can go to hell in a dirty bucket. Asshole, Japanese rightist, 30 going on 60 fart knocker. So I've tarred the whole area with the same brush. And the women there have the shortest legs in Japan (the fattest go to Gunma). I've had better nights out in Hamamatsu. Stick there freaking miso katsu and ebi fry.

Sorry, I'm going to go and take my pills now or have another Chu-Hi

I have been all over Tokyo, Osaka, Kobe and Nagoya, and without a doubt Nagoya sucks my white ass. Not only is the night life their creepily almost non-existant (the streets are pretty much empty after sundown), the people there are just kinda weird. I always thought my Nagoya friends were a little off, but it wasn't until I spoke to my Kansai friends about them that I realized this was a national phenomenon. Nagoya chicks, especially, are screwy. Maybe that's why they spend tons more on weddings there than anywhere else. My recommendation is get the f out of Nagoya.

What (or who) is good or bad is a function of attitude.

I let myself be happy and have a great time anywhere I live. I don't tie that state of mind with any particular place because eventually the place changes and if I've bonded with a place then I'm set up for some nasty melancholy, anger and frustration. That's a weight I don't want to carry.

Of course what makes me happy is different from you but I think the principle still applies.

Instead of Nagasaki and Hiroshima we should have nuked Nagoya and Sendai. Nagasaki and Hiroshima are both interesting towns. Nagoya makes the shittiest dump in New Jersey look nice and Sendai? What a fucking bore! But Torasan, my reply to you was over the top, sorry for that. Something about that Jesus comment and your obsession with Boby Fisher sort of rubs me wrong. It seems that a lot of the newbs are a little off. Charles starts off with me by dissing my punkness and music knowledge which to me is unforgivable. Bongo writes a rude comment about about another poster's recently deceased family member. Yall may think I'm rude but I've never stepped over the line like that. I'll stand by botfly but Sirwanksalot getting in a flamewar with kamome sucks. Often kamome has been my only ally here when people get sick of me and now I'm afraid he's gonna be pissed at me. Oh what's happenning at FG?

You're worried kamome will be pissed at you? The question is, what's happening to AK?

If new members can't handle kamome's uppityness with flaming grace, they don't belong.

Completely off topic, but I always manage to confuse Niigata, Nagoya and Nagano in my tiny little brain...but...
During the World Cup football a couple of years back, I was in Niigata for the England vs Denmark game. I got there early and planned to watch the Germany game on TV in a local bar. The nearest bar was packed so I thought about going to a different venue. Luckily, standing outside was a friendly Niigata-based Englishman who suggested we go to another bar away from the station.
I was talking to him with my English mate, a much better Japanese speaker than me, and my mate's Japanese girlfriend, a fluent English speaker. The conversation went something like this
"There's a much better bar not far from here, it's up the road...and...and its over the bridge and...er...on the right...and and," he looks at the Japanese girl "Nihongo dekimasu ka? Eto...Massugu itte..." then followed a Japanese version of up the road, across the bridge and on the right with, if anything, a bit more ambiguity. As the friendly Englishman subsequently explained, "Sorry guys, I've been here so long, I find it much easier to explain things in Japanese."
I defy anyone to come up with a better example of an FG in the field.

The fist tip-off that the FG you are talking to has been there to long is when they say "From today." My english went from a normal fairly educated American male to about a 6 year old.

"Yoko, because later I will phone to you please teach to me your phone number."

Very off topic but interesting......I live in Aichi and I just can't disagree with you Nagoya and Aichi bashers at all. AICHI SUCKS BIG TIME. The people are very right wing and don't approve of outsiders at all. Even if they're from the next town. Only people who like to litter could love Aichi. There aren't enough cops on the beat.
