SOI Music Festival

Postby djgizmoe » Fri Aug 20, 2004 8:48 am

"The SOI-Music Festival got off to a landslide start last year as a way to introduce people to the pop-culture of Thailand (presented last year at Club Milk in the Ebisu district of Tokyo). Neither a simple introduction nor exchange event, the festival was an experiment in bringing together the most interesting people and music from a number of locations into the same space in order to see what reactions would take place.
This year we are scheduling events in both Tokyo and Bangkok. Bangkok will see an exhibition and live performance from Cornelius (also featuring Spank Happy!). Those in Japan will experience live performances from a number of Thai musicians."

This upcoming festival looks pretty interesting. And with Buffalo Daughter playing on Halloween Eve, definitely something to check out.

Yeah, it looks like my first source, the Tokyo Gig Guide, has the dates confused.

Too bad, as Halloween Eve would've been perfect (I think it's a Saturday...).
Cay's a nice place to see a show, too.

Futon are an international combo Thai/Japanese/UK and probably more. They covered "I Wanna be Your Dog" which was a regular in Thai clubs but made little impact anywhere else. That's the only thing I've heard them do.

No-one nails the song except Iggy

I got a couple versions of Sonic Youth nailing it (although one is actually with Iggy). World of Skin super slow, Uncle Tupelo acoustic are also good versions, nailed or not.

Well, the SOI Festival went out with a bang this Halloween at Aoyama Cay. The three Thai bands rocked sufficiently, Buffalo Daughter were great as usual and we were even graced with a Buffalo Daughter/Cibo Matto supergroup moment when Yumiko was joined on stage by Yuka Honda on keyboards (!) and Sean Lennon on vocals/lead guitar (!!!). Full "I was there and you weren't" gloat report with pics on the way...
